When Your Regular HD Satellite TV Isn’t an Option: A Guide for American Television Lovers Abroad

Foreign trips and vacations are thrilling experiences. They enrich us, teach us and embolden us. When we visit another country, we learn about different cultures, eat different foods, experience different ways of life and practice different languages. A trip to a foreign place expands our horizons.

And while the thrill of experiencing all new and different is a great one, it can grow tiring. Many Americans abroad find themselves yearning for a taste of home. Especially for television-lovers, the TV can be quite the remedy for homesick travelers. Though the experience may not be comparable to that of high definition or satellite TV, it will bring a little bit of comfort.

1. American Series with Subtitles

Globalization and technology have rendered American culture inescapable. You’ll be surprised to find that some of your favorite comedies and dramas are shown in the country you’re in. Look for networks like the Warner Brothers, Fox and Universal – they’ll be sure to show some of your favorites. The dialogue will most likely be in English and with subtitles, therefore allowing you to view them just like you do at home. They require no foreign language skills and can be a nice escape.

2. Sports

Watching a sporting event means no language skills are necessary. It can be a relaxing and enjoyable, yet culturally informative, experience. Watching sports in another country – especially if the sport is specific to the area – is a good way to open your eyes to culture and entertainment in that place.

3. Dubbed American Movies

Instead of watching new American movies with subtitles, watch old ones you’ve already seen that have been dubbed in the language of your host country. Since you probably remember the story, it won’t matter if you don’t catch every single word of the dialogue (or the majority). You’ll be training your ear to the language of the country you’re in while enjoying an old favorite.

4. Local Series and Shows

If your language skills are strong enough, watching local series and television shows is a great way to get to know the culture of the place you’re visiting. While you may not understand everything, you’ll probably be surprised at how well you can follow the story.

5. News

This can be the most difficult to watch, especially in another language. Newscasters speak quickly. And since there’s no story to follow, you’ll have to rely on your ears and a few visual clues to understand what’s going on. While you may not be able to understand everything, you’ll probably catch the drift.

Watching television abroad can be both a comforting and enriching experience. It can be an escape from what sometimes feels like a barrage of information. It can also be a look into the popular and mass culture of a far and distant place.
