Film Review: Sex, Lies, & Videotape

Few independent films have had such a profound influence on the industry as much as director Steven Soderbergh’s Sex, Lies, & Videotape. In 1989 when the film was released and it took the world by storm it’s because it was a film that openly discussed sexuality and it’s effect on people. It was unflinching and new and audiences’s didn’t know what to make of it other than it kind of reminded them of their own lives. Their own relationships in this fragmented world we live in.

Even today the film has an impact as its theme’s of isolation and self discovery within the confines of the relationships we have with ourselves and others holds true even more. James Spader, Andie MacDowell, Peter Gallagher, and Laura San Giacomo give honest performances as people who are trapped in relationships that they just can’t seem to get out of. We have all felt this way at some point in our lives and this film just opens that doorway to reveal it to the world.

Soderbergh is no stranger to revealing the frailty of human nature having done so in such films as Full Frontal and Traffic and Solaris, and it is here in this film that human nature is laid bare to all. For all.

Made at the height of the age of consumer video cameras, this find was also a look at voyeurism as Graham (Spader) is presented as someone who interviews woman with his camera and uses it as a means of self discovery which ultimately he can’t find. It is only through Ann (MacDowell), who is at first repulsed at the use of the video camera as a means of revealing ones inner thoughts and demons, that turns the camera back on Graham in hopes of helping him reveal his own inner thoughts and demons. For all the good that the video camera accomplishes it is also a crutch to which prevents Graham from seeing the truth about himself.

The film in an awkward way is one of Soderbergh’s most pure films before his studio films (such as Ocean’s Eleven or Erin Brockovich) in which all the characters are flawed yet honest and real.
