Cheltenham Festival Of Horse Racing - Tuesday 16 to Friday 19 March 2010
The biggest week of the year in National Hunt racing is fast approaching once again. Cheltenham is expecting over a quarter of a millions racegoers over the four days this year and once again anticipation is high for a superb festival of top quality racing.
As always, the Cheltenham Gold Cup is the showcase event - can Kauto Star win in again or can stable mate, Denman, overcome the setback of unseating Tony McCoy at Newbury in the Aaon Chase and return to winning ways?
Over the four days we are looking forward to some tremendous action with the line-up looking mouth watering.
Day 1 Races - Tuesday
Supreme Novices Hurdle, Arkle Challenge Trophy, William Hill Trophy Handicap, Champion Hurdle, Cross Country Handicap Chase, David Nicholson Mares Hurdle
Day 2 Races - Wednesday
National Hunt Steeple Chase, Neptune Investment Hurdle, RSA Chase, Queen Mother Champion Chase, The Coral Cup, The Fred Winter Handicap Hurdle, The Champion Bumper
Day 3 Races - Thursday
Jewson Novices Handicap, Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle, Ryanair Chase, Ladbrokes World Hurdle, Festival Plate Handicap, Kim Muir Challenge Cup
Day 4 Races - Friday
JCB Triumph Hurdle, County Handicap Hurdle, Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle, THE CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP, Foxhunter Steeple Chase, Conditional Jockeys Hurdle, Grand Annual Chase
Somewhere approaching 700 horses will take part and every race will be as competitive as ever. The task of picking the winners is going to be as hard as ever. As usual there will be tips flying around for numerous runners in every race and the task of finding the winner is sure to be a hard one. While it is appreciated that the 'tips from the stables' do have merit, anyone serious in looking to make money betting at the meeting must have a serious grasp of the form.
A new service for 2010 is the Horse Racing Trend Wizard service which is offering a 3 day free trial to all prospective new members. The trial could be started on the Tuesday and allow 3 days of free form at a glance on your computer screen.
I see this being very useful for those who don't have unlimited time to study the form. At a glance you can see which horses can be ruled out and also which are the ones to consider as potential winners. It takes a lot of the mundane form study away and although simple to view, it is surprising how reliable the form can be... a must try for anyone looking to try to delve through the form this year at Cheltenham!
Following the trial the service is available on a monthly fee of less than 40 pounds which, considering the amount of information, and ease of analysis of each race (the form of every runner in a race is all viewed on just one screen, so there is no annoying clicking from page to page or runner to runner) is excellent value for the true form student.
With or without this service, Cheltenham is sure to be full of ups and downs as usual, so first and foremost enjoy what is sure to be another thrilling spectacle!

Passing the Plate $24.95 Passing the Plate shows that few American Christians donate generously to religious and charitable causes -- a parsimony that seriously undermines the work of churches and ministries. Far from the 10 percent of one's income that tithing requires, American Christians' financial giving typically amounts, by some measures, to less than one percent of annual earnings. And a startling one out of five self-identified Christians gives nothing at all. This eye-opening book explores the reasons behind such ungenerous giving, the potential world-changing benefits of greater financial giving, and what can be done to improve matters. If American Christians gave more generously, say the authors, any number of worthy projects -- from the prevention and treatment of HIV/AIDS to the promotion of inter-religious understanding to the upgrading of world missions -- could be funded at astounding levels. Analyzing a wide range of social surveys and government and denominational statistical datasets and drawing on in-depth interviews with Christian pastors and church members in seven different states, the book identifies a crucial set of factors that appear to depress religious financial support -- among them the powerful allure of a mass-consumerist culture and its impact on Americans' priorities, parishioners' suspicions of waste and abuse by nonprofit administrators, clergy's hesitations to boldly ask for money, and the lack of structure and routine in the way most American Christians give away money. In their conclusion, the authors suggest practical steps that clergy and lay leaders might take to counteract these tendencies and better educate their congregations about the transformative effects of generous giving. By illuminating the social and psychological forces that shape charitable giving, Passing the Plate is sure to spark a much-needed debate on a critical issue that is of much interest to church-goers, religious leaders, philanthropists, and social scientists. |
