Behind Silk's Beauty
Softness, thinness and shine with strength. These characters has made silk one of the most, if not the most, adored fabrics. Nonetheless, with the time-consuming and extremely tedious manner it is produced, obtaining it apparently comes at a high price. Because of these attributes, people have come to associate the fabric with beauty, elegance, wealth and luxury.
The Chinese are the first ones to discover silk production. For thousands of years, they have maintained a monopoly of silk by keeping the process of its production a secret. They succeeded in safeguarding this secret for a long period by imposing death penalty on anyone who revealed the process. However, the process of producing silk eventually became known to the world.
Silkworms are responsible for creating silk. The best kind of silk though comes from the cocoons of the larvae of mulberry silkworms, scientifically known as Bombyx mori. Silkworms, despite the name, are not actually worms but a kind of caterpillar.
For about a period six months, silkworms feed on mulberry leaves before they enter the cocoon stage. The cocoons are made up of balls of jelly-like substances which are produced in the silk glands of the said insects and which harden when exposed to air. Silk farmers then place the cocoons in hot water to prevent the maturity of the silkworms and loosen the cocoons' fiber at the same time. Approximately, it takes about two thousand silkworms to produce a pound of silk.
Silk is a good material used for embroidery. Since silk has a triangular prism-like feature, it allows light to be refracted in different angles. For this reason, silk embroideries appear in different colors. Added with a feature of luster, these embroideries emanate a metallic look as well. Additionally, silk embroidery can be done through machine; however, its effects are better and more precise when done by hand. Some then prefer having it done professionally in firms offering affordable custom embroidery service.
Because of the high price of silk, people have produced replicas of the fabric with more affordable synthetic materials. However, these replicas do not have the same attributes as that of real silk. Aside from the other qualities of real silk, its naturalness give off a cooling effect as air comes through the fabric. Despite being costly then, many still prefer clothes and home furnishings, including curtains, beddings and blankets, which are made of silk simply because of the superior quality that these offer. These clothes and furnishings can always be added with desired designs as well through affordable custom embroidery.
