There is a myth that feeding wild birds in the summer makes birds lazy and discourages them from looking for food on their own. It is thought the handouts make birds dependent on them. This is far from the truth. Studies show that birds do not receive more than 25% of their food from bird feeders. As a matter of fact, there are good reasons why birds should be fed during the summer. And the surprising fact about this ritual is that this exercise benefits the humans that are doing the feeding. It would seem that fewer aviaries visit feeders in the early to mid-summer days because there is more of an abundance of natural food such as insects, fruits and seeds and many birds are nesting and behaving in a more secretive manner. Therefore, their visits to a feeder seem to be few and far between. Determined bird watchers, however, can enjoy a delightful variety of aviary visitors by keeping those bird feeders filled with nutritious treats.

Some suggested nutritious treats are fruit, seed, fruit jelly, nectar, suet, mealworms, nectar and peanuts, depending on the species of birds one is trying to entice. By studying the eating habits of the particular species you want to entice and working to that means, the devoted bird watcher can expect to have his troubles rewarded.
