The costume of the French Maid was originally inspired by burlesque theatre. It is meant to be a translation of what a French housecleaner would wear while she is cleaning the house since France is thought of as such a sexualized place in the world. Today, French Maid costumes are the absolute most popular, recognized fantasy wear picked for costume parties and for the bedroom.
The traditional French Maid costume portrayed black stockings with a garter belt. Why the garter belt? Well, one reason is that was all that was available many years ago and the other reason, they're sexy. A woman in France wouldn't be caught in anything less than they sexiest form of hosiery. Original costumes called for a white ruffle panty or form of ruffle bloomer to be worn also so if the maid happens to bend over then you would not only see the garter and a bit of thigh but you might get a peek at the ruffles too.
If you are going for a proper look for your costume you will need to get a garter belt. You can however vary from this option and opt for some simple thigh highs. Spend the extra couple dollars if you can and get a superior brand that will stay up all night. The last thing you want to be doing is tugging at your stockings all night. Plain black stockings are the tradition but you may want to wear fishnet stockings, fence net stockings, or those sexy sheer ones that have that gorgeous seam up the back of your leg. If you choose these, please take the time to get in the mirror and make sure that seam is straight!
Variations to the stocking are becoming more popular than tradition through the years. Many women choose to incorporate the "school-girl look" into their French Maid costume and wear knee high socks or over the knee socks or stockings. These will either be black or white. Many over the knee variations with have black bows at the top which seem to be a big hit with this costume. Knee highs socks can simple or can have ruffles, rhinestone, bows or lace.
When choosing your stocking for your French Maid costume, pick what makes you feel the sexiest. Obviously, traditionally you are going to choose the black stocking but many people vary from this and add their own personality.
