Well, here are some tips for you:

Know the price.

Fountain pens can come in different prices. For example, those that are produced by well-known brands are more expensive because of the reputation these pens already have. You can also count on the quality of the product.

If you can afford to spend at least a little over $50 for a pen, then that's good news. It means you can get a pen that would last for a long time. In fact, you can even make it as a collectible later on.

However, if you think it's going to be too much, you have another option: disposable fountain pen. You can get one for as little as less than a dollar. It doesn't have a lot of features unlike the costlier ones, but surprisingly, a disposable fountain pen works fine.

Determine the nib.

The nib is the part of the pen that comes in contact with the writing surface, where you deposit your fountain pen ink. It plays a huge role in how your writing pattern will look like. For example, rigid nibs produce broader lettering, while pointed nibs appear much finer and sometimes cursive.

When it comes to cost, the broad nibs are a lot cheaper because they don't have iridium tips. However, if you want neater lettering, it would be great if you settle for pointed nibs. Nevertheless, it's still important for you to know that broad nibs have more consistency with regards to ink flow.

Decide on the ink capacity.

If you're an avid pen writer, then most definitely, you need a fountain pen that can hold a lot of ink, so it would be cost-effective for you. Of course, since it's a great add-on, pens with these are more expensive. If you are simply going to use the pen to sign letters, for instance, you can go for fountain pens with average ink capacity.

Ask if there's a warranty.

Warranty is usually extended to fountain pens from credible manufacturers. It may come in handy when something goes wrong with your pen. You also need it if you're spending a lot of money for such writing instrument.
