There can be no doubt in your mind that your baby is teething. Between the incessant crying, the cheek rubbing and the drooling - not to mention the lost hours of peace and quiet! - teething can be an incredibly painful experience for many babies. Worst of all, the discomfort and pain experienced by teething babies can often make parents feel especially helpless, which is further exasperated by a lack of knowledge or experience with the teething process. If your little bundle of joy is going through the teething stage, it's important to arm yourself with plenty of information and advice - not to mention plenty of ice-cold teething rings for your baby to chew on!
Here's what every parent needs to know about symptoms and solutions for teething babies:
Know What To Expect. A baby will develop twenty primary teeth (otherwise known as "baby teeth") during the course of the teething process, with the full set appearing by the time your child is two or three years old. While it may seem as though your baby's teeth will appear at random, you can actually predict which teeth will first break through your baby's gums. Outlined below is the general pattern that most babies follow during their teething stage:
· The incisors - the central two teeth on the top and bottom gums - will start to appear six or seven months after your baby's birth. Additional incisors will soon follow after eight months, which will give your baby four teeth on the top and bottom rows.
· Your baby will have a brief respite for two to three months, after which the first molars will break through the gums. The molars - which are essential for chewing - will mark your baby's ability to start consuming more solid foods.
· Around 16 months after your baby's birth, the canine teeth make an appearance, which will further increase your child's ability to eat more "adult" foods.
· Around your child's second or third birthday, the last of the baby teeth - the second molars at the back of the mouth - will have finally arrived, marking an end to the teething process.
Don't be alarmed if your baby doesn't follow this particular pattern, as teething is a largely hereditary process. If you and your partner teethed late, then chances are your baby will as well. However, many babies start teething as early as four to five months, giving parents an unexpected introduction to the world of teething!
Now that you know what to expect during the teething process, let's examine the symptoms that teething babies display.
Teething Symptoms. Not sure what teething symptoms to watch out for once your baby hits the six-month mark? Generally, your baby will experience increased irritability, as the teething process can be very painful when the incisors and the molars start to break the skin of the gums. Drooling and coughing are often frequent secondary teething symptoms, since the excess saliva produced during the process can cause drooling and choking. If, however, your baby's cough sounds deep or raspy, be sure to make an appointment with your health care provider right away, as this can often be indicative of an illness. Other teething symptoms include frequent gnawing - this is done in order to ease the pain that the process often causes - and the inability to sleep well, as the pain can regularly interrupt a baby's sleep cycle.
How To Ease Your Baby's Pain. If you can't stand to see your baby in so much discomfort and pain during the long teething process, there are several things you can do to help make your baby more comfortable. For example, frozen teething rings are popular parenting choices, as the cold numbs the gums of the baby while providing something substantial to chew on. Additionally, drinking cold water can help ease some of the pain that your baby is experiencing, while many parents find that spoon-feeding chilled yogurt, applesauce and other semi-solid foods can adequately ease discomfort while providing much-needed nutrition.
If your baby is still experiencing a painful teething process, ask your healthcare provider if Infant Tylenol will help ease the pain and discomfort. Your doctor will be able to guide you in regards to dosage amounts and ensure that you're not giving too much to your baby boy or girl. On the other hand, oral numbing products designed specifically for babies have provided much-needed relief to many parents; again, use these types of products under the care and direction of your baby's healthcare provider.
While the teething process can be uncomfortable for both baby and parents, it's important to note that it typically lasts for two to three years. Once you've passed this milestone, you can kiss your baby's painful teething days farewell for good!
