Triumph Stag is a popular limited collector car in the US. In the UK, stag was most welcomed by car owners and it has the largest one-model owners club. Also, it has the reputation of the most stolen classic car and this is evident of the truth that Stag is one of the most wanted cars. Everyone talked about Stag as a British sports car, but it was highly popular for the Italian styling of the car given by Giovanni Michelotti. Triumph 2000 salon was the basic model of the Triumph Stag. The original 1971 Triumph Stag was a 2+2 convertible car with four lamp grille. The 1971 Triumph Stag has 3000 cc V8 engine with four cylinders. It was a 3 liter overhead camshaft engine. The top speed of the car is 118mph and it will come to rest to 60 mph in just 9.3 seconds with 145 HP power. The distinctive feature of 1971 Triumph Stag is a T-shaped roll over bar which supports doors and windscreen. Triumph models were available with soft top, hard top or both.
Clearly, during the introduction of 1971 Stag, the car was considered as a luxurious sports car even though the performance was not very sporty. However, it outtalked Mercedes 280 SL because the price of Triumph Stag is half the price of SL. Those who wanted to feature sporty looks, but can't afford an SL preferred Triumph Stag. The car rose in popularity when James Bond drove a Triumph Stag in his movie, Diamonds are forever.
The styling and looks of the car made car buyers prefer 1971 Stag. However, car owners frequently faced engine problems due to the poor build quality of the engine. Electric windows, power steering, and power assisted brakes are standard features of the car. The manufacturers didn't care to provide other options. Manual box was offered along with standard 3 speed automatic gear box. Air condition and luggage racks were other options.
Proper maintenance is required for the engine which is made of aluminum and cast iron. Anti freeze in winter is alone not sufficient. With proper maintenance, corrosion of metals can be prevented completely and engine can work at its peak performance. Reliability of 1971 Stag is unmatched. Road holding quality of 1971 Stag is very good and the suspension is just right. The weight of the car is very moderate, but still, it is rigid and rattle free.
Now the 1971 Triumph Stag is a classic collectible British sports car. Various owners and enthusiasts clubs support the Stag. Engine problems of the original Stag can now be easily overcome by super powerful alternatives like Rover V8 or Ford Capri 2.8 V6. With some required tweaks, this once known as flawed British car is now the most wanted collectible car which receives thumbs up from the driver as well as onlookers.
