Falmouth is most famous for its harbour. It is the third deepest natural harbour in the work and is also the start and finish of many races and round the world voyages. Charles Darwin ended his famous voyage on the HMS Beagle in Falmouth. Falmouth Harbor is also the first stop for any Navy ships returning to port. The first word of Trafalgar was delivered to Falmouth and the gold dust robbery occurred here.
Falmouth docks are very important to the town's economy as it is still the largest port in Cornwall. Cargo is transferred in Cornwall and many vessel bunkers in the harbor. Cruise ships also operate from Falmouth with over 64 ships stopping in this harbor. Due to all of the ships Falmouth is a popular holiday spot with 5 main beaches; Maenporth, Swanpool, Gyllyngvase, Tunnel and Castle.
The book the Wind in the Willows was first developed in Falmouth in 1907. It stemmed from letters written by Kenneth Grahame. The Forgotten Story by Winston Graham is set in Falmouth. Winston Graham also wrote Poldark. Windbag the Sailor, Scott of the Antarctic, Treasure Island, and The Onedin Line has scenes filmed in Falmouth.
Boating and water sports are extremely popular in Falmouth. The town hosted the Tall Ships' race in 1998 and was the finish point for Robert Manry's Atlantic crossing which incidentally began in Falmouth, Massachusetts. Sir Francis Chichester stopped in Falmouth on his round the world sailing journey and Dame Ellen Patricia MacArthur also stopped in Falmouth during her record breaking solo yachting journey around the world.
Some interesting historical buildings to visit include the Admiralty House on Arwenack Street, Passmore Edwards Free Library, All Saints Church on Killigrew Street, the Roman Catholic Church of St Mary Immaculate on Killigrew Street and Kimberley Place, the Central Methodist Church, old constabulary, old Drill Hall on Brook Street and the St Michael and All Angels Church.
