We are all very familiar with basic time management strategies, so how come we are all still as scattered and chaotic as always? How come all of those "proven" time management tactics aren't paying off for most of us? It turns out the problem isn't about managing time. It's about managing yourself.

You have a given amount of time available every day and there is little you can do to manage that. The only thing you are actually in control of is yourself. Therefore, the faster you stop complaining about there not being enough time and start learning about self management through time, the faster you will get your life in control and become more productive.

It all comes down to setting your life up for success...

Set Priorities...

Everyone has a long daily to-do list, but some of those listed things will always be more important than others. If you don't know what your top priorities are, you will constantly find yourself side tracked without fully accomplishing anything. Part of effective self management through time is knowing what has to come first, and what can be sacrificed.

Remember, something will always be sacrificed but you can decide what gets the axe!

Set Goals...

Once you know what the most important projects or tasks are, set some realistic goals. These can be for any area of your life, but make them directly related to your top priorities. Focus on just a couple goals or maybe one larger, very important goal at a time. Print it out in large, bold font and hang it up somewhere that it will be seen throughout the day.

When you reach one goal move right on to the next!

Set Boundaries...

Think about the things or people that typically throw you off course or stand in the way of you accomplishing your goals. Maybe it's your children crying and fighting outside your home office or an annoying coworker who constantly wants to chit chat.

Now that you have goals and are focused on self management through time, there is no room for these distractions. It's time to set some boundaries. Set limits on when the coworker can chit chat with you and stand firm. Make it clear to your children that you will be working during certain hours and find them their own busy work to do in that time.

Set Your Expectations...

Now that you know what could potentially stand in your way, expect those things to occur! Better yet, expect unexpected things to occur as well. Start planning what you will do when the kids come screaming, the woman comes chatting, or other distracting things occur. You have to stick to those boundaries, but that isn't possible if you aren't expecting and dodging obstacles along the way. If it's not a high priority to you, don't let it throw you off course!

Set Your Routines...

Finally, set routines for your daily life and make yourself follow them until they become habits. Part of effective time management through time is the ability to ease into productive daily routines. For instance, you can plan work hours with scheduled exercise breaks to meet fitness and work goals at once.

These routines should focus around the area of your life at the top of that priority list!
