It was during a much-needed and happy rest period at Merton in 1802, that Nelson and Lady and Sir William Hamilton made a tour of South Wales and the Midlands. Nelson's popularity had grown immensely following his victories, the most recent being at Copenhagen, and crowds of people gathered to greet their hero. The group included in their tour a visit to the Chamberlain Porcelain factory in Worcester on 26 August.
Robert Chamberlain had been Head of Decorating at the new Royal Worcester factory in the 1780s but in 1783 he left to set up his own company in the city. Nelson's party were so impressed with their visit to his factory, they placed an order for an elaborate breakfast, dinner and dessert service. Decorative pieces such as these would have taken several years to produce, each being made by hand and requiring up to ten firings in the kiln. The couple chose an extravagant design for their breakfast service based on the No. 240 Japanese style from Chamberlain's pattern book: a floral pattern in dark blues, oranges and reds inlaid with gold. Nelson must have spent a considerable amount of time concentrating on the detail of the pieces, personalising each so there would be no doubt as to the owner.
Each piece is decorated with Nelson's Coat of Arms and includes various symbols from his illustrious naval career:
Coronets
Ducal Coronet
Viscount Coronet
The Chelengk
Nelson was presented with a piece of jewellery by Selim III, the Sultan of Turkey, in recognition of his success at The Battle of the Nile, the highest honour a foreigner could receive from a Muslim leader. The diamond-encrusted brooch had a large central diamond surrounded by 13 rays of diamonds. Nelson was so pleased with the piece he wore it in his hat on many occasions. Unfortunately, the original was stolen from the National Maritime Museum in 1951.
San Josef
Included in Nelson's Coat of Arms and incorporated into Royal Worcester's design. The San Josef, Spain's ship captured by Nelson at the Battle of St Vincent, is seen in profile.
Tria Juncta in Uno
Used on the Coat of Arms and various pieces of the breakfast service, Lady Hamilton used 'Tria Juncta in Uno' from the motto for the Order of the Bath (Three joined in one) to refer to the group of three living at Merton.
Cost of Breakfast Service
The receipt from Royal Worcester lists the pieces of the breakfast service that was completed in 1805 before Nelson's death at Trafalgar. Sadly, the other services that had been commissioned at the same time in 1802 were never started. Painting costs for the finishing touches of 150 Ducal coronets, 150 San Josef crests and 150 Viscount Coronets added an extra £40 to the total production cost of £120 10 shillings and 6 pence. Nelson's funeral took place on 9 January 1806, ten days later the Chamberlain factory sent the bill for the breakfast service to Emma Hamilton. It was never paid.
