Sometimes, staying in beats going out. Never is this more true than when it comes to choices in films, with many of the theaters in the country these days more focused on mega-explosion blockbusters, rather than classics designed to keep the entire family happy, or comedies that do more than simply rely on bathroom humor. And it's not just the film scholars of the world who are hoping for something a little bit better than whatever the box office fare of the week happens to be. Anyone who remembers a time with more carefully-paced films before the addition of endless jump cuts and tricks designed to make pictures pop off HDTV sets knows that there are better film choices out there, and that classic no longer means something set in the 1940s or 1950s.
For those nights when staying at home to watch a great film sounds better than spending a ton of money on something that might be mediocre at best, here are seven great films for your next Saturday in. From comedies to classic dramas, there's something here for everyone.
#7 - Grey Gardens. This acclaimed 1970s documentary was recently remade into a fiction film by HBO, starring Drew Barrymore. However, for those who are serious about incredible moments in cinema, it's necessary to watch the original, as bizarre and sometimes upsetting as it gets. The story of two former well-off women, relatives of Jackie Onassis, who are holding down the fort in a depilated Hamptons mansion is just as powerful today as it was 40 years ago.
#6 - The Graduate. While finding this film on satellite tv will be easy, many people haven't actually taken the time to sit down and watch it. All of the familiar scenes, the ones that have been parodied to death by other movies, are still just as striking in the context of the film, and for a generation of somewhat lost twenty-somethings, this definitely is the sort of piece worth revisiting.
#5 - Time Bandits. In the world of science fiction, there are throwaway films that focus more on special effects and lack of script, and there are great moments that combine the powers of an alternate reality with actually strong writing and excellent direction. This is one of the latter, and those who are sci-fi fans will finally find something to agree on with those who prefer films that have a bit more going on.
#4 - Raging Bull. Because fight movies and biopics used to be something different. A true moment of shining genius for Martin Scorcese, and a great chance for Robert de Niro to eat his way across Italy gaining the weight to play the real-life boxer the film is about. Shot in black and white and beautifully directed, this is one of those movies that everyone should see.
#3 - The Goonies. Sometimes, a classic movie for kids can manage to continue to win over adults time and time again. With low-tech special effects that nonetheless look good on HDTV sets across the country, this story of exciting adventures in imaginary faraway lands will reawaken the youthful enthusiasm in anyone who happens to watch.
#2 - A Wonderful Life. A classic that saturates the airwaves around Christmas, this is the kind of film worth watching when it's not the holiday season, simply to see that it manages to broadcast sentimentality no matter the time of the year. Simply a great moment in filmmaking, and surprisingly poignant when it comes to criticizing banks and systems that are still causing grief for people today.
#1 - Amelie. Yes, there are subtitles involved. But this incredible romantic film is magical even after repeated viewings, and is one of those movies that never, ever gets old. Those looking to laugh and cry on Saturday night should find this one on satellite tv and sit back to enjoy one truly remarkable character's journey through Paris.
With direct tv pay per view, the world of the movies is a whole lot closer. Compared to what cable tv offers, the dish is simply better.

Millionaire Moments $10.9 'Which country is sandwiched between Ghana and Benin?'. Asked this question on 64,000, the very first contestant in ITV's hugely successful 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?' opted to take the money. Some have since won a million on the show, whilst three have made absolutely nothing at all. The programme format has been sold to 120 countries - it is easily the most successful British light entertainment export of all time. Here, for the first time, presenter Chris Tarrant tells the story of the show's development from day one in September 1998 and describes his own thoughts about its enormous success. The book will include many of the multi-choice questions from the show, making it a truly interactive book for the quiz fan as well as a compulsive humour-interest story of big winners, big losers and some hysterical screamers. |

Morning Moments with My Master $24.99 "The author of this inspirational book has filled its pages with love and compassion, a rare insight into God's Word, and with love for all God's creatures. She sincerely believes that God loves everyone and wants each one to surrender his life to Him. She truly desires to be an instrument in His hands to spread His precious love to all. The poems, written over a period of years, are a product of her daily devotions early in the morning. She has gained a love for His Word through her daily study of the Bible and has been inspired by the many writers whose words she has loved and admired. The desire to write poetry was instilled in her at a young age as she had much time to ponder on God's love and the beauty of His creation. Throughout life He has been close by her side to guide her in His ways and to provide guidance through wonderful loving parents, dedicated teachers and Christian leaders. He has been her Counselor, Comforter and Guide through the difficult times in her life. The years were lonesome after losing her husband but a loving God has given her an entirely new life and given her the joy of serving Him. After her retirement she lived in the country and enjoyed hours of walking and praising God for the beauty He created for us to enjoy. These excursions gave her much material for her writing. She feels it is only fitting that these last years she has should be dedicated to writing poems and gratefully praising Him for His goodness through her lifetime. Her prayer is that Morning Moments With My Master will be an encouragement to all who read. Fern Hanlin Coberly was born in Kanawha County, West Virginia, July 21, 1928. She graduated from Tanner High School in Gilmer County andattended Glenville State College. She earned her Accredited Records Technician Certificate and served as Medical Record Librarian at Spencer State Hospital, Spencer, West Virginia, for thirteen years. She was widowed in 1974 and enrolled in Appalachian Bible College, Bradley, West Virginia, in 1976. She graduated in 1980 with a B.A. degree in Bible and Christian Education. She was appointed Dean of Women in 1979 and served in that office until her retirement in 1989. After residing in Gilmer Couny for fifteen years, she moved to Elyria, Ohio, where she is an active member of the Church of the Open Door. She published her first book of poetry, Moments Of Meditation, Sharing God's Love, in April,2007." |
