The best way one can make sure that a gold jewel is real is if you purchase it from a trustworthy jewelry shop. There are special shops that are authorized to sell precious metal jewels and can give you a quality certificate as a proof of their value. If you purchase them from famous brands you can be a hundred percent sure that it is the real metal, because usually they are very keen on their reputation and they wouldn't allow fake jewels to ruin it.

There are a few practical ways you can determine whether it is real or not by yourself. An excellent way would be checking if the piece of jewelry is magnetic or not. You should know that gold is not a magnetic metal, so when holding it near a magnet it shouldn't pull toward it. However this is also not the safest way to check if it is the real metal, because it is not the only one that doesn't react to magnets.
Some people can tell if it is authentic just from a first glance. The way it is colored is a great indicator. You could also rub the jewel against a piece of unglazed ceramic material. If it is a fake it should leave a black streak. You can also compare its' weight with that of another piece of jewel approximately the same size. But this is not a very exact process because there are external factor that might influence the weighing process. One of them is the fact that many pieces of jewelry are actually empty so they might weigh less than they look like.
A good way of testing the authenticity of a gold jewel is by checking its density. The more carats the gold has the higher its' density. A real piece of the precious metal should have about 19.3 grams/ml, or somewhere close to that. You can also use the nitric acid method of determining what type of metal it is. But this is a little bit more complicated than the others, because this acid is not really easy to purchase. However you should know that gold is insoluble in it.
