Widely known as the most haunted City in Europe, York's history dates back through a gruesome past, all the way back to 71 AD when the Romans first established the city calling it Eboracum.
After the Romans left, York changed its name to Eoforwic in 625, becoming the capital of Northumbria. In 866 the Vikings defeated the Saxons and renamed the city Jorvik.
King Harold of England defeated the Vikings at the Battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066. Yorks terrible history includes Guy Fawkes being hung, drawn and quartered. It was also in York where the famous highwayman Dick Turpin was executed. As you enter one of the City's bars, try to imaging the heads of those found guilty of treason stuck on pikes - a truly horrid message to those who might be considering a misdoing.
With such a rich historical time-line, the battles and gruesome medieval mistreatings, you'd expect York to have one of two ghost stories associated with it.
When plumber Harry Martindale was fitting the central heating system in the cellars of the Treasurer's House next to York Minster, when he heard the sound of a horn in the distance. The sound of the horn drew nearer. Then a carthorse emerged from the wall, with a Roman solider riding it, followed closely by more soldiers dressed in uniform wearing plumed helmets.
Strangely, the soldiers appeared to be walking on their knees. Then as the soldiers approached an excavated area of the cellar, it became clear that they were marching on an old Roman road, which lay buried 15 inches below the cellar floor. What's more, when Harry emerged from the cellar, looking like he'd seen ghost, the curator is reported to have said: "You've seen the Roman soldiers, haven't you?"... Apparently this wasn't the first time this apparition had been seen.
There are so many similar, unexplainable stories in York, but this is probably the most famous of York's ghost stories. Following the recent popularization of ghost hunting in York more and more visitors are attracted by York's history and with York being a popular tourist hotspot, finding hotels in York isn't tricky.
If you're coming to York are plan to book a hotel, you may need to check the racing calendar. Availability gets scarce when the famous York Races are on, so book early.
