Give love to your children, especially those with disabilities

Give love to a person with disabilities because this is the surest way of integrating him or her in the family and society at large.  My wife and I believe that the greatest thing which has happened to Christabel who has cerebral palsy is to care for her and she has paid back by being good to us

What is love?

Love is showing or feeling affection for somebody especially a family member, friend, or any other person.  The Greeks show love in three ways: - Agape, Filia and Eros.

Love is the supreme virtue: highest power, the word cannot mean anything less. To see the highest is to love.

Love is the life of heaven, for God is love and God is life. It is therefore eternal, and supreme.

Filia: It is ordinary type of love; it is realtionship between family members, relatives, friends, and neighbours.

Eros: Although it is not the subject of discussion in this article, eros is due to sexual attraction.  Sometimes it is called romance.  It is a relationship between couples or partners.

Agape and Filia love is genuine.  It means “I see a need in you, let me have the privilege of meeting that need.”  Instead of taking for itself.  Genuine love gives to others; it motivates us to help others reach their full potential in life.  The love of God is genuine love. We have given love to Christabel to realize her potential.

Love completes and crowns every human relationship. What is neighbourliness, if there is no love between neighbours. People should show love to the immediate neighbours who include the spouse and the children. This may have external effect to produce a mutual co-operation, justice, peace and security in a community, nation and the world.

Our daughter is unable to walk and her use of limbs is restricted.  This daughter with disabilities has given us happiness and there are no words to tell her, how special she is and how very much we love her.

She is such a good daughter and she brings so much joy and fulfillment to our lives.

She has a beautiful way of bringing out the best in others.  She has a certain charm about her which always make people smile.

Christabel is really a dream come true, a special treasure, a source of pride, and she is liked by the parents, family and friends.

the next thing to love is encouragement.  We have to give encouragement to persons with disabilities.  Encouragement is a form of love. It is not a surprise to hear about people with disabilities, especially Cerebral Palsy feeling dismayed or their spirits dampened with the realization of their condition.  However with love and the power of encouragement to help people with cerebral palsy, then can you appreciate the true meaning of empowerment.

It may be harsh to say that there are people more gifted and successful than others or others only being able to do something less, especially for those with cerebral palsy or other disabilities, but the power of encouragement affects the lives of people and it helps maintain the balance of human nature.

There are several forms of human encouragement, but no matter what type it is, it will definitely set the tone for not only building character, but also differentiates the men from the boys or women from the girls.

Encouragement is the key factor in shaping how man is able to stand taller than the rest, it is the authority that take the role of leadership in an organization or simply the voice that moulds the opinion of others.

But generally, encouragement is what binds organizations, strengthens relationships, the defining thought in a somewhat difficult thought process, even for people with cerebral palsy or other disabilities.

Encouragement takes in many different forms and most commonly found in leadership, empathy, assurance and motivation, among others.

Common beliefs point to encouragement as a trait among those possessing advanced knowledge, sizable wealth, mental and social stability.  However, encouragement can also come from people with low standing in society but through wisdom and humility, they may be role models and may inspire other people.

Encouragement can lead to persuasion which can sway others to develop a sense of belongingness and solidarity.

For those people with the skills to encourage, it is imbued in people considered as firm and have the will power to make things work for all concerned.

Encouragement is not limited to an individual, it is also manifested in the way things are perceived, without prejudice or discrimination that may tend to place people with cerebral palsy at a disadvantaged situation.

So by now you know how encouragement helps to balance the forces and characteristics of human nature, especially since it defines how strengths make up for the weaknesses – that is the power of influence.

Encouragement is about love, patience, care, understanding, empathy and most especially, it is learning how to cope and come to terms with something that will linger throughout the rest of their lives, since cerebral palsy is by far ‘incurable’ but is not communicable.

In our family, we have managed to live with our daughter with cerebral palsy happily.

It is not that easy to live with cerebral palsy, but the first step in dealing with the disorder is to help others learn how to cope with cerebral palsy.

It may not be a disease or illness, but by knowing the importance of understanding cerebral palsy by family members can truly help us be aware of how it affects the lives of many people all over the world and how we can help people cope with the disorder. This may help people with cerebral palsy live normal and productive lives.

It is by the thought of understanding and awareness that we may be able to change the perception among people that cerebral palsy is not a threat, nor it is a dangerous disease. It is but God’s way of telling us that these are challenges that will help us understand and appreciate life better and this is where we hope to draw out strength and make it the power of encouragement to help people with cerebral palsy.
