Collars - Dog collars (no not the one a Priest wears) Cat collars...what a kerfuffle! 'Do I need one?' or 'Should I get one for Mitzy?' that is a question every owner of a pet will ask especially if it is a cat that joins the family. There are strong reasons for your pet to wear one just as there are strong reasons why not, but that is a choice you as a responsible pet owner will have to make. But the question here is 'Is Mitzy going to be an indoor or an outdoor cat?' Life isn't easy is it...decisions...decisions...decisions...but a decision to be made for the good.

Generally people don't think twice about buying a collar for a Dog but a Cat is a different matter. Cat collars are usually very dainty things and most will have been designed that should your Cat be an outsider, heaven forbid it is caught on a branch or whatever, then the elasticized piece on the collar allows for the collar to pull free rather than choke your little friend. Collars are reasonably priced and you can get some extremely fanciful ones should you feel your 'baby' is very special to you. Combat colored; Hi-Viz; Reds; Pinks, Greens...you name it and there are so many different ones out there just waiting to adorn Mitzy and her friends.

We all know that fleas are a constant problem no matter where or what part of the world we live in and to help 'combat' that collars can be bought that are treated and prepared to help combat the flea problem, but these options usually have a 'shelf-life' on them of three months and then it is time to get another one. Once Mitzy is used to wearing a collar then changing it on a regular 3 monthly cycle should pose no problems for both you and Mitzy.

How do you know how tight to fit the collar? Rule of thumb says that when you fit it there should be at least two fingers room (some will say one finger) between collar and neck, but like anything else or everything with being a responsible pet owner you will know how best to judge that and you can be rest assured that if Mitzy thought it was going to be too tight for her...she would tell you.

You can get some collars that come with a bell on them, if your baby is an outdoor cat be prepared to find that the collar disappears after a short while especially if the cat is a 'hunter'. It won't like it if it is stalking its prey...gets ready to leap into action...and lo and behold the 'darn' bell rings telling whatever it is stalking that it is there coming for it. Our feline friends are very clever and know when something is not right and if its fun time is being spoilt by the constant ringing of the bell you can bet your bottom dollar that...'Ooppss I've lost my collar Mum/Dad!' will be at the forefront of the cat's mind. In saying that though you can get the little disc to put on the collar with the relevant details on it as to where the cat lives - go for that because then you will have the solution well and truly collared!
