Siamese Fighting Fish Care
Have you ever went into a pet store and wondered how it would be to own a siamese fighting fish? They are the fish that have exotic colors on their side and they are individually housed in a cup so they do not fight and kill each other. These fish can be a great treat to own and they are a very nice conversation piece when you invite company over.
I am a huge fan of the siamese fighting fish. I think they are the most beautiful and their tail fins are very unique. I went to visit a few pet stores and looked at all the fish that they had. I wanted to get a custom fish tank built that can house a few siamese fighting fish but also keep them from actually coming in contact with each other.
With planning on this kind of investment I wanted to get the most unique fish that I can find with different colors and mix of colors. It took me almost a week to visit all the stores in my area and after I had an idea of the color of fish I wanted. I wanted to also look into siamese fighting fish care since I will be looking after four of them.
I really had no idea what the best food was or how much food they should be given to ensure they remain healthy. I knew that they have regular fish food but the person helping me at the pet store told me it is not healthy at all for the fish I wanted.
They also told me that the siamese fighting fish needs to have a certain size fish tank and it needs to be cleaned frequently. Since I was having a custom tank built I really needed to think all this through before I made the final plunge.
After reading more about siamese fighting fish care I learned that there is alot involved with caring for them. I decided to take my time and read about everything involved with care and health. Getting this type of fish is really wonderful and I am glad I finally decided to get it done. But just buying the fish and tossing it in a tank is a really bad idea as there is much more involved.

Betta splendens Siamese Fighting Fish- Male $3.99 Bettas are one of the most beautiful of all the anabantoids (gouramis, or "air-breathers"). Their ability to breathe air directly from the atmosphere enables them to live in the stagnant pools and puddles in which they naturally occur. The bettas seen in stores today are very different from the wild types. Throughout the years the betta has been bred for longer fins and intense colors. They are very different from the short finned, mostly brown, wild bettas. Bettas have evolved a very intense territorial aggression to the point where they are best kept by themselves. They do not tolerate other males and females are only tolerated when breeding. This natural behavior and their ability to breathe atmospheric air makes them ideal for keeping in bowls and small aquaria. As long as the water is kept relatively warm and is changed regularly, they do very well. Bettas are carnivorous fish and must be fed meaty foods. There are many special prepared Betta diets (flake/pellet) that are excellent foods. Blood worms, brine shrimp, and plankton are also excellent as treats. Keep in mind that a betta has a stomach about the size of it's eye. It should be fed an eyeful every day to maintain it's shape and health. It is very popular to keep bettas in a flower vase with a terrarium plant like the peace lily. This is an excellent setup for the fish but the water must be changed weekly or more and the fish fed regularly to keep it healthy. You must also keep a fair amount of space between the water level and top of the vase, because bettas need an open space to breathe atmospheric air. Also, BETTAS DO NOT EAT THE ROOTS OF THE PLANT! This is a popular misconception about this particular setup. If you happen to see your betta nibbling the roots, this is probably just out of starvation (if you aren't feeding it) or boredom. PLEASE NOTE: There are many names for the particular betta color patterns but most are variations of blue and/or red colors. The fish pictured above are representative of some of the variations available. If you are looking for a specific coloration, contact a livestock department representative or simply allow us to choose one of our favorites for you! |

Strombus alatus Fighting Conch - Small $9.99 The Fighting Conch ( Strombus alatus ) is a fairly robust, thick-shelled conch. It has a greyish shell with a darker brown color on the inside. Its body is greyish and it has two large eyes with obvious irises. Despite the aggressive name, they are algae and detritus eaters and are harmless to other animals. The True Conchs ( Strombus , Lambis , Tibia , Terebellum , Varicospira , and Eustrombus ) are algae eaters with some of the most iconic "seashell" shapes. They are usually found buried in the substrate, most often finer sand environments and may live in the open sandbed or on the reef. Some, especially Strombus and Lambis conchs, have well developed eyes that will watch the action around them. These eyes extend from under the lip of the shell and the left eye usually expends from a notch in the side of the shell. Conchs feed on algae and detritus in the aquarium. They need a large amount of plant matter in their diet and may starve if out-competed for food or if there is not enough algae in the aquarium to support them. Since most conchs - especially larger, mature snails - have large openings, it is best not to keep them in a tank with potential predators like some fish and hermit crabs. Conchs move using their powerful foot to propel themselves. When not buried in the substrate or when threatened, they can appear to hop over the bottom. |

Betta imbellis Peaceful Betta $5.99 "Imbellis" means peaceful, and these bettas are certainly different from their Siamese Fighting Fish relatives, Betta splendens. Betta imbellis does better in a community aquarium, though they still may have quarrels with similar fish, they are considerably less aggressive. Contrary to popular belief, this betta would prefer a larger rather than smaller tank. Nothing less than 1 gallon would be best, and the water should be cleaned regularly. A sponge filter or some kind of filter that doesn't have a strong pull would also be helpful. This betta also appreciates a place to hide, floating plants, etc. Bettas are carnivores. A meaty diet of betta pellets, freeze-dried bloodworms, tubifex, or a betta flake is best. Do not feed solely bloodworms- bettas do need some fiber for proper digestion. Special Note: Bettas do not eat the roots of the Peace Lily plant. They may nip at them out of boredom, or out of desperation if they haven't been fed! Be sure to feed your betta if you are keeping him in the Lily set-up, and leave a small space for the betta to get to air. Bettas are labyrinth fish, which means they have a special organ that allows them to breathe air. Bettas may not be shipped to California. |
