It's always fun playing along with the recording of your favorite song, isn't it? When I was first starting out, I found that doing this really improved my rhythm and timing - and the best part was that it felt like I had my own backup band!
There's a fun song by Never Shout Never called First Dance that prominently features the ukulele. You may have already done an online search for the chords and found sites that showed you how to play the song using the C, F, and G chords. But playing those chords along with the recording didn't sound quite right, did it?
That's because the chords you're playing are in one key and the song was recorded/written in another. Why? Because oftentimes, the chords you find in fake books, song sheets and online sites are transposed into a key that's easy for beginners, like the key of C. The chord progression is the same but the key is different. That's why it sounds fine when you're singing and playing the song by yourself but not fine when you play along with the recorded version.
Here's how to play along with Never Shout Never's First Dance using the chords in the original key of the song and how to play those chords in the correct positions on the neck so it sounds exactly the way you hear it on the recording:
Verse: F, C, B-flat, C, F. Chorus: B-flat, F, C, B-flat. These are the actual chords in the key the song was recorded in. If you were previously playing C, F and G, substitute F for C, B-flat for F, and C for G.
Super-accurate way: Use a movable chord shape based on the B-flat chord to play all three chords. Great thing about this is you can take just this one shape and play the entire song by just shifting it up and down the ukulele neck. The chords F, B-flat and C can be played with the B-flat chord shape at the 8th, 1st and 3rd frets respectively.
Similarly, a song with the chords G, C and D can be played with the same B-flat chord shape at the 10th, 3rd and 5th frets. Notice how the chord is named after the note you're covering on the top/1st/A string. Consult any fretboard diagram to learn those notes and memorize 'em all (hint: that's what those fretmarker dots are there for)
Lots of rock songs like You Really Got Me, Anarchy in the UK, Jessie's Girl, etc, were written on the guitar using this concept of movable chords.
Strumming: Using a constant up and down strum, accent beat TWO throughout the song.

The Modern Dance $10.95 John Martin, arguably the first modern dance critic in America and trail-blazer for the art form's validity in the public sector, first published The Modern Dance in 1933 and claimed it to be "perhaps the first attempt...to analyze the American modern dance." The book is the text of four lectures delivered by Martin at the New School for Social Research in New York City (1931-1932) on the dance form as a philosophic perspective. Certain common principles underlie the many systems and methods of modern dancing, and these texts endeavor to discover a full explanation of the modern dance. The distinguishing characteristics—what it is made of and how it differs from other types of dance—form the starting point. Martin discusses the dance form as a philosophic perspective, considering (among other topics) the basic experience of physical movement, the effectiveness of beauty in form, metakinesis, vertical and horizontal rhythms and divergent approaches to art. The content is organized in four parts: Characteristics of the Modern Dance; Form; Technique; The Dance and the Other Arts. |
