You have just taken your grandmother's antique wooden trunk to be appraised and found out it's worth a few thousand dollars more than you thought. As you realize what a total treasure the piece is, you want to find a way to highlight it among the rest of your home decor. Leaving the certificate of appraisal seems a bit obvious, but you do want guests to notice and talk about the piece.
Here are a few tips to get your "conversation starter" starting conversations.
Tip 1: Isolate it:
If you want something to be noticed, you need to eliminate distractions around it. A priceless Ming vase in a curio cabinet surrounded by music boxes and snow globes will simply blend in, while the same vase alone on a pedestal will call attention to itself. Similarly for a piece of furniture, if you want it noticed, you can't squeeze it between the sofa and love seat. If it is to stand out, it needs to stand apart.
Tip 2: Spotlight it:
Lighting does more than just allowing you to see - when properly used, it can guide your guests' eyes to what you want them to notice. Your showpiece should be in the brightest area of the room. You can achieve this easily and inexpensively with various types of accent lighting. Table lamps easily bring light to one side of a room or another. If you want to highlight, for example, a statue on a table in the center of the room, consider a hanging light. If it is a hung painting, use wall washing.
Tip 3: Target it:
When you want to highlight a word on a page, you circle it. You can easily do the same thing in a room with area rugs. Simply place a circular or oval rug in a prominent place and put the potential object of your guest's attention on top of it. Use contrasting colors, textures and even shapes to bring the area into better focus. For example, a brightly colored square rug placed diagonally to the rest of the room will stand out better than the same rug going with the flow of the room.
Tip 4: Put it in the Path:
Room traffic has a natural flow. A person walking through or around the room will tend to pick a set distance from walls and obstacles in a room. Pay attention to where you and others in your house walk and you will notice points where people tend to gravitate as they move around. Placing your showpiece there will increase the likelihood that people in the room will gather around it.
Tip 5: Complement and Contrast:
The basic principles of camouflage are using colors that blend and lines that fit in with the environment. If you do not want your pride and joy to disappear, do the opposite. Make sure that the colors and lines stand out. If you have a light end table, don't place it on a light carpet near a light wall - instead, place it on a dark colored area rug. Similarly, you can place a rectangular table on an oval area rug or vice versa.
With a little planning, some inexpensive purchases and these simple tips, your next get together will quickly become a chance to show off treasures instead of having them get overlooked.
Senior staff writer Fran enjoys decorating homes from the floor up and using decorating pieces as a focal point. She loves using oval area rugs and other shaped rugs on floors to bring life to the room.

François Couperin and 'The Perfection of Music' $110 François Couperin's contribution to the literature of baroque keyboard music has long been recognized. François Couperin and 'The Perfection of Music' updates and expands upon David Tunley's valuable 1982 BBC Music Guide to the composer, and examines the whole of Couperin’s output including the organ masses, motets and chamber music, in addition to the well-known works for harpsichord. Taking as its focal point Couperin's concept of the perfection of music through the union of the French and Italian styles, this book takes a more analytical approach to Couperin's work. Early chapters outline the main contrasting features of the two schools in the seventeenth- and early eighteenth centuries and it becomes clear that Couperin's expressive power owed much to his fusion of the polarities of the French classical tradition with that of the Italian baroque. The book features a number of appendices including the prefaces to Couperin's work both in the original French and in English translation and a glossary of dances of the French baroque. |

Fran ois Kevorkian, alias Fran ois K, is a French DJ, remixer, producer and record label owner. His career then skyrocketed, and he quickly made this his fulltime occupation, although some work was at more commercial venues such as the club New York, New York in 1977.
