There are some deep cameos/ultra cameo coins that are worth thousands, and there are some that are only worth a couple of dollars. What's the difference? Well, the main reason is because of supply and demand. Pre 1971 (or so) ultra cameos are a lot scarcer then ones minted after 1971.
Before 1971, the US Mint did not make it a regular practice to mint proof coins in "deep cameo" style. So, these coins were a hit and miss situation. This made them very rare because each die could only produce so many ultra cameo coins before the die deteriorated. In certain years, they were pretty much non-existent.
A lot of collectors did not even know about the deep cameo proof coins at first. Producing these coins was not something the US Mint set out to do. So many collectors did not recognize them, let alone collect them. It was only when the US Mint started minting all proof coins in ultra cameo, that collectors started searching for them. This pushed their demand up. But, with supplies extremely low, some deep cameo proofs shot through the roof. Today, some specimens still remain unaffordable. Not all, but most of the pre 1971 ultra cameo never see a down turn.
Today, all proof coins are minted "deep cameo" style. Each coin will have ultra frosty details and deep mirror fields. So, when grading proof coins today, they should all come back ultra cameo. I consider any proof coin that was minted after 1971, to grade anything less then deep cameo is an imperfect coin. They'd probably not be worth buying, regardless if you are buying them for your own collection, or for investment purposes.
Searching and buying pre 1971 ultra cameo coins can be very rewarding. It can make you very proud, and can improve your retirement fund if you should purchase the right coins. Your best bet is to start with key date deep cameo coins minted prior to 1971. This ensures that you buy investment coins that have a reason to go up in value in the future. If one coin series is too much for your wallet, try going to another coin series. Always go for the scarcer "deep cameo" coins. It may be difficult trying to decide whether to buy a coin according to its' key date status, or its' ultra cameo attribute. I think a "scarcer deep cameo coin with semi key date status" is a better buy then a "not so scarce ultra cameo coin with key date status." In other words, the scarcer ultra cameos are better. I think in many instances, they trump the key dates. So, to be able to buy a deep cameo key date is merely killing two birds with one stone. One such example would be a 1955 Franklin Half Proof. It's one of my favorite coins. But, it's very difficult to find with the right attribute. So if you should come across one at the right price, don't let it slip away.
