The story of the outlaw archer in Sherwood Forest and his Merry Men has been told for over 700 years and all that time people have wanted to be like and look like the "Prince of Thieves". Wikipedia lists over 50 films and TV shows about Robin Hood and that doesn't even count the numerous books that have been written which shows the interest in the legend and as a result the interest in looking like the legend in Robin Hood Costumes.
Most of us are familiar with the phrase "rob from the rich to give to the poor" and we know that Robin Hood was in conflict with the Sheriff of Nottingham and there was a Lady Marian around. Other than those basics, the story can get a little muddled. That's due to the fact that in those 50 films and TV shows each one of them were written with a different twist depending upon if they wanted to emphasize romance or fighting and adventure or the idea of winning out over evil corruption in the hands of power. There have also been comedies such as Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men in Tights.
The legend originated in England and in an early version a relatively unimportant noble of Nottinghamshire, named Robin of Loxley, became an outlaw for poaching deer. Deer in a royal forest belonged to the king, and killing one was a crime of treason, punishable by death.
So Robin scurried off to Sherwood Forest, making a living by stealing from rich travelers and distributing what he had stolen to the poor. He got himself a bunch of followers and a wife, Lady Marian. The evil Sherriff of Nottingham couldn't capture him and that led to many of the individual stories. When another King came into power, Robin was given a pardon and his lands were restored.
So, did it really happen? According to court records in the area, by 1300 at least 8 people were called Robinhood and all but two were fugitives from the law. Around the same time there was also a Sherriff of Nottingham, William de Grey, who seems to have been attempting to chase down those who were considered outlaws in Sherwood Forest. So it seems most likely that several different outlaws contributed to the legend of a fugitive in the forest, and since the general populace was no fan of the official government, the idea of a good outlaw helping the poor probably brought about the retelling of the story and it eventually became legend.
Just as there were probably a few Robin Hoods, there has been no shortage of actors who have portrayed him. The more well known have included Douglas Fairbanks, Errol Flynn, Sean Connery, Kevin Costner and most recently Russell Crowe. You could include Frank Sinatra as "Robbo" in Robin and the 7 Hoods, a musical set in 1930s gangster Chicago.
With so many Robin Hoods it's a good thing there are so many Robin Hood costumes for men, women and children. You can opt for getting Halloween family costumes and dress everyone in their own version of a Robin Hood costume or as one of the band of Merry Men or get a Friar Tuck costume.
