Chiang Mai Festivals: Bo Sang Umbrella Festival

Probably one of the most unique festivals in the entire country, and one which Chiang Mai hotels and Chiang Mai resorts offer easy access to, is the Bo Sang Umbrella Festival. Generally held in the month of January, this is an event which travellers from around the world consider to be one of the most unique cultural activities to be experienced on the planet. The making of umbrellas has for years been a traditional craft in Chiang Mai, and over the years it has developed into a fairly profitable business for both locals and the country as a whole. Chiang Mai hotels and Chiang Mai resorts throughout the city will be filled full of umbrella enthusiasts from around the world, and rooms should be booked several months in advance if you plan to attend.

The umbrellas are definitely the highlight of the festival, as its name suggests. They range in size, and are not only adorned with exquisite floral designs but in most cases intricately painted by hand by local craftsmen and women. Designer parasols from silk and mulberry paper are also available, and the entire area transforms into a celebration of local culture. Chiang Mai hotels will be filled with participants as well as enthusiasts, with the former coming here to participate in the various competitions held for umbrella makers and painters, all of whom compete to win various prizes. There is also a beauty pageant which features local girls participating in a colourful parade with the most attractive and smartest girl given special prizes.
