Feedback is an effective way of communicating with employees, colleagues or members of your team. Feedback can be both positive and constructive (rather than negative).
When giving feedback it is important to have a balance of positive and constructive feedback otherwise the receiver may feel that they only ever receive one type of feedback. It is also important not to always link the two, especially in the same conversation - giving with one hand and taking away with the other.
Build an environment in which feedback is welcomed. This may take time if it's not something that has been practised before. Try to give positive feedback whenever you can - this will help to build trust and make the person more comfortable when you need to give constructive feedback.
Giving good/effective feedback:
Be timely. Don't leave it too long after the event to provide any form of feedback. Give feedback as soon as possible, otherwise the effectiveness of the communication will be lost.
Be aware of your body language, tone and the words that you use when giving feedback. Don't use confrontational words or tone even if it's likely to be a tough conversation. Be direct, open and honest.
Consider their frame of reference - it may be different from yours, which will affect the message that they receive. What are their values, attitudes and experiences?
Here are four steps to follow when giving feedback:
Be specific. What are the facts as you see them? Describe the specific situation with facts, events and behaviours that you observed. What specifically was said or done?
Your thoughts. What impact has the action had on other people, the business or you generally? What are your thoughts, opinions or conclusions as a result of the action? Remember they are your thoughts so state this - "I think that ...". Link what you observed to what you thought.
Your feelings. How do you feel about this situation (NOT about the individual) - frustrated, disappointed, pleased - "I feel..." not "you made me feel ..."
The outcome. What is the result or outcome you want from this? What do you want to change, improve, stop or continue? Be clear about what you want so they can understand and know what they need to do to change or keep doing.
Once you have given feedback, allow them to respond. Have they understood what you have said? Learn to listen actively to what they say. [Contact me if you need information on Active Listening Skills].
Constructive feedback is more difficult to give than positive feedback but both forms need to be effective. Plan your feedback. Why are you giving feedback, when and where will you give it. It may take only need a few seconds or a few minutes.
Maintain a balance when you give feedback. Make sure that you let people know what they doing well and where they can make improvements.
If you would like additional information on providing feedback, active listening or how to deal with difficult situations please contact me to arrange a specific session to discuss this in more detail.

Based on Forces for Good , this groundbreaking book demonstrates how the six practices of high-impact nonprofits apply to donors aiming to advance social causes. Rather than focus on the mechanics of effective grantmaking, reporting, or evaluation, this book instead proposes that donors can become proactive catalysts for change by rising to meet the challenges of our increasingly interdependent world. Key principles include: going beyond check writing/traditional volunteering; advocating for change; leveraging business; forging peer networks; empowering individuals; leading adaptively; and developing learning organizations. Contains robust case studies depicting every type of philanthropy (corporate, community, operating, specialized, and large private and family foundations) Includes easy to use "Key Takeaways" tailored for donors at the "beginner" and "experienced" levels of catalytic philanthropy Authors are internationally-acclaimed philanthropic, nonprofit, and corporate social responsibility strategy experts who frequently speak and train on high-impact philanthropy In good economic times or bad, this book provides guidance for givers to increase the impact of their charitable resources and go beyond check-writing to help solve problems and change the world. |

Give a Little $14.99 "With open hearts and open hands, we gave what we could, and a little became a lot." - -from Give a Little Dimes destroyed polio. Five bucks can beat malaria. Give a Little: How Your Small Donations Can Transform Our World not only contains remarkable, inspiring stories of how small donations are making an extraordinary difference in the lives of millions both here in the United States and around the world, but also lays out where and how to start giving . . . today. Together, ordinary Americans have far more transformational power than any government or big foundation. In 2007, giving by American individuals amounted to $229 billion-that is, 82 times the amount the Gates Foundation gave that same year. Simple, inexpensive things-a water filter, a bike, an irrigation pump, a bed net, a goat-cause a ripple effect that lifts a whole family, a town, and, astonishingly, even a nation out of poverty. Inspired by Smith's twenty years in the nonprofit sector, Give a Little shows how easily we can dip into our pockets and, with just a few dollars, change the world. |

When a burglar is caught in the act by a wealthy homeowner, it's the beginning of an intensely erotic connection in "The Bad Boy." Why the Wealthy Give $32.95 Through a series of candid personal interviews with nearly one hundred donors, Why the Wealthy Give offers an in-depth look at the world of elite philanthropy. Francie Ostrower focuses on the New York City area, with its high concentration of affluent donors, to explore both the motivations of individual donors and the significance of philanthropy for the culture and organization of elite groups. In so doing, she offers an account of why the wealthy give that also provides insight into the nature of elite culture, status, identity, and cohesion. Emphasizing the diversity of philanthropy, the book also shows how and why different types of donors support different causes. It further demonstrates how, in the face of considerable change, elite philanthropy has adapted and therefore endured. A timely discussion explores the ways in which elite donors view the respective roles of government and philanthropy. Why the Wealthy Give shows that elite philanthropy involves far more than writing a check. The wealthy take philanthropy and adapt it into an entire way of life that serves as a vehicle for the social and cultural life of their class. This is reflected in the widespread popularity of educational and cultural causes among donors. At the same time, Ostrower finds divergent patterns of giving that reflect alternative sources of donor identity, such as religion, ethnicity, and gender, and explains why certain kinds of donors are more or less likely to diverge from the prestige hierarchy of their class in their philanthropy. |

Never Give Up! (Paperback) $28.13 On her popular television programs as well as in her books and public appearances, Joyce Meyer provides a deep connection to scripture and an awareness of the challenges of modern life. She also adds a healthy dose of encouragement. Her BATTLEFIELD OF THE MIND series underscored that we have to fight our internal battles, overcoming the doubts that lead to self-sabotaging behaviors. In NEVER GIVE UP!, Meyer provides encouraging life stories of people whose tenacity in the face of great challenges approached grace. These achievers--some famous, others not--took on enormous challenges, or made great changes in their lives. As a result, they came out stronger and with a deeper spiritual dimension than they would have otherwise. |

Give Us Liberty $12.99 This groundbreaking manifesto is essential reading for tea party activists—or any American seeking to understand what the Tea Party is fighting for and what's next for the movement Former House Majority Leader Dick Armey and Matt Kibbe have been on the front lines of one of the fastest-growing and most influential political phenomena in recent memory: the Tea Party movement. As the leaders of the advocacy organization FreedomWorks, they have helped guide and give voice to hundreds of thousands of activists from across the country and have a strong vision for the future of this powerful grassroots uprising. United by a strong belief in limited government and individual liberty, Tea Party members are changing the American political landscape. Unlike mainstream media accounts that observe the Tea Party movement from the outside looking in, Give Us Liberty chronicles the roots and rise of a new breed of taxpayer activism in the voices of those who were there. Discover the personalities that drove the first meetings, the unknown candidates whose principled stand earned them unlikely victories, the march that gathered more than a million activists, and the bedrock beliefs that brought them together. In this national call to action, Armey and Kibbe provide an intimate history of the movement, explain how citizens can join the cause, and chart the future of the Tea Party—and America. Give Us Liberty also contains a battle-tested, step-by-step guide to organizing and effecting change in any community. |
