Memory foam is used in a variety of consumer products, from mattresses to pillows and mattress toppers. While mattresses have helped countless customers sleep longer, deeper, and more comfortably, some complain that the material becomes too hot at night. To explain this seemingly misguided phenomenon, one must consider the dynamics of memory material and the ingredients used to produce it.
The Old: Heat Retaining Composition
Memory foam is best known for its ability to return to its original shape after compression. This was found most useful in mattress application, as the foam gently "pushes back" against the curvature of the body that lies on top of it. This results in evenly distributed support all along the body, especially along the pressure sensitive areas of the hips and lower back.
This ability, though a hallmark for the unique material, is also what causes users to become hot through the night. As a body sinks into the mattress, the foam compresses to form around the unique shape of whomever is sleeping on top of it. This provides the unparalleled support and comfort most often associated with memory foam. However, this also creates the opportunity for body heat retention, especially in older foam mattresses that do not utilize the leading edge ingredients of today.
Early Memory Foam and Heat Retention
The first company to market mattresses made of memory foam to the general public was the Swedish-based Tempurpedic company. The market was incredibly receptive to the new-age idea of sleeping on the new material, and the trend caught fire. Soon other companies followed suit and produced similar mattresses. Before long, complaints began to surface of mattress heating, mid-sleep sweating, and an overall uncomfortable sleep experience.
The heat retaining ability of the early material was due primarily to the ingredients used in production. Some mattresses used petroleum byproducts-the materials left after petroleum is extracted from crude oil to produce gasoline. Other companies used clay and clay-based derivatives in the production process. These materials, while effective in increasing density, had the unfortunate side effect of heat retention. People would lie on the mattress, sink into it, and fall asleep insulated in foam that restricted proper air flow.
The New: Breathable Material
Appeasing the complaints of customers worldwide, some producers have began constructing mattresses using all natural materials that allow for superior air flow. These materials are usually plant-based, like cotton, and allow body heat to pass swiftly through the mattress without overheating the user. Two such progressive companies include Essentia and Select Foam, each with an online stores from which customers may shop for their ideal mattress.
The response to this new, cooler material in today's marketplace has been positive overall. Consumers now receive the support that memory foam promises, without the negative side effect of excessive heat retention.
This article has been an unbiased investigation of memory foam construction. Brands researched include Select Foam Memory Foam and Essentia brand mattresses.

Hallmark $47 Sir Oliver Popplewell became, in his own words, officially 'judicially senile' after a distinguished career at the Bar, as a High court judge specialising in defamation, arbitration and sports law - an appropriate niche for a Cambridge cricket Blue. And in public life he achieved prominence as chairman of important public enquiries such as the Bradford Stadium disaster. "Hallmark: A Judge's Life at Oxford", the sequel to his acclaimed autobiography, "Benchmark: Life, Laughter and the Law", tells how he went to Oxford University to read Philosophy, Politics and Economics as the oldest undergraduate ever to be admitted - with considerable press and media coverage and good-natured amusement among family and friends. Here is a sharply observed, sympathetic yet critical picture of modern Oxford seen from the perspective of a leading judge and public figure who could contrast this experience with his Cambridge days from the late 1940s. But this is much more than the story of an older student. It is hugely entertaining account of a life lived to the full.Sir Oliver takes his readers into his confidence, shares his experience and presents a unique facet of a fascinating life which can serve as a warm but sharply observed social and cultural history of modern Britain. |
