Domestic pottery has gone hand-in-hand with human civilization. What does handmade clay art dinnerware bring into our lives that the cheap factory-made dishes and cups don't? This question strikes the heart of capitalistic society, in which conformity and convenience have become the chief goals and "lifestyle" has replaced living. In our modern society, the fast-food equivalent of hand-crafted pottery has led to a slew of faddish dinnerware in "contemporary" shapes and colors which have replaced meaningful objects - the functional designs made by potters, which bring the concerns of domestic necessity into contact with the concerns of artistic creation. The privilege of using pottery made by hand is the idea of human endeavor, the link with other people rather than corporations and factories. Most people are still in touch with this idea when it comes to food. A home-cooked meal is still considered the epitome of nourishment for the body and soul. However, modern society has lost contact with the idea that pottery can do the same thing. By buying fashionable pottery from Ikea people lose touch with something in themselves, in the same way that eating at McDonald's every night would do.
The ready availability of factory-made ware has led to the gradual and insidious de-texturization of the home. The smoothness and uniformity of factory-made pottery, as compared with handmade pottery thrown on wheels or crafted with slump molds lack the sense of creativity, of human skill and imagination, and of human connection. The connection between the object and the human in handmade ware is so strong that indeed the very word "handmade" signifies a fanciful stereotype which, as with Sara Lee's so-called "home-baked" pies, has often been applied to things which aren't handmade at all. This is why companies which peddle lifestyle often use the word "handmade" for their factory-made items, and even go to the extreme of incorporating fake throwing lines to imitate the texture of handmade ware.
The connection between the potter and the user is one of the most joyful and valuable aspects of being a ceramic artist. Creating works which enter daily life, and have the possibility of comforting people when they feel lonely or sad is a privilege which not all artists share. The fact that throwing or using slab rollers to create handmade pots is not the stuff of "cutting edge" art - the simplicity and humility of ceramic art - is one of its deepest satisfactions. Where handmade pottery comes into its true strength is in the fact that when people share a meal or cup of tea or coffee with friends and loved ones, the artist is also present. The knowledge that the cup or bowl you are using has been designed and fashioned by another person brings people into contact with one another. This makes for a community of potters / artisans and users. The knowledge that the pottery you are using is the result of meaningful work, of a series of artistic decisions bounded by the limits of functional form and the properties of the clay itself, is the essence of communication and true beauty.
Handmade pottery, whether wheel-thrown or formed using slab rollers and slump molds, has a value which transcends the aesthetic. Hand-crafted clay art dinnerware is a link between people in a world becoming increasing sterile and void of meaningful human interaction.
