The chandelier is probably the most eloquent and ornate fixture that a home can boast.

The fragile complexity of the chandelier was in all likelihood brought home to many by the hilarious scene in the famous 1980s sitcom Only Fools and Horses when a misunderstanding between the brothers and their grandfather led to a priceless piece lying shattered on the ground whilst the one they had been trying painstakingly to unscrew remained defiantly affixed to the ceiling.

But in real life too it is the delicate vulnerability of the chandelier that earns this particular fitting its unique and rightful place in the heart of the interior designer.

The very earliest candle chandeliers were used in places of assembly during the Middle Ages. Ordinarily took the form of a wooden cross with a number of spikes upon which candles could be secured, usually at the four extremities of the cross. The whole assembly would be hoisted to an appropriate height on a rope or chain suspended from a hook.

From around the fifteenth century much more complex forms of chandeliers based upon ring or crown designs began to become more popular decorative features, usually found in palaces and in the homes of the nobility, the clergy and the merchant class. The high cost of night-time illumination led the chandelier to develop into a symbol of luxury and status.

In the nineteenth century gas lighting became a major source of illumination. Branched ceiling fixtures were produced, and the term gasolier gained currency. Gas-lit chandeliers began to appear in the mid-19th century and in a great many instances candle chandeliers were converted to gas.

Luxury appearance, practical use

Today, chandeliers are available in a huge array of sizes, designs and styles. Some are minimalist and incorporate standard bulbs and even lampshades whilst others are more outwardly expressive and audacious.

Whilst their role is primarily decorative they still do fulfill a practical function. Despite the antique appearance even of many of the most modern chandeliers the functionality is usually defiantly 21st century, with wall mounted electrical switches and dimmers. Most chandeliers that are manufactured today combine the best of the old and the new.

It is difficult to overstate the positive visual impact that some attractive chandeliers can create in your home. They really do make a whole world of difference and lend a touch of class to your lounge or living room.
