'Tis The Season to Overeat
It's difficult for anyone to stay motivated on their food plan. But it's especially difficult for a food addict to stay focused and motivated on their food plan - especially during the holidays. Society doesn't help when it comes to social gatherings - we make food the most important thing about the gathering, rather than the event itself! So this article has been designed with tips to staying motivated in mind for the food addict in you.
Holidays - Chock Full of Trouble
We are a society that uses food to socialize. Unfortunately, food becomes the focus rather than the event or the people. As a food addict one thing that I had to learn early on was that I was not on a diet. My food plan is a way of life. My food plan is a means to being abstinent and staying away from that first compulsive bite. I learned that my ability to stay on my food plan was a matter of life and death. If I take the first bite, it's over! So here are some valuable tips to staying motivated to not eat no matter what:
Tip #1 - Go to the holiday gathering with the goal in mind that you are going to focus on the people and the conversation - not the food.
Tip #2 - Depending on what time the event is, pack your meal. Yes, as crazy as it sounds, that works! If you pack your meal in a Tupperware, you won't be caught off guard or tempted to eat what you are not supposed to be eating.
Tip #3 - Bring plenty of telephone numbers with you of people who support you so that when the urge hits you (and believe me, being around a lot of food will tempt you), you can call someone until the urge passes. Trust me, this tip works the best.
Tip #4 - If you really feel that you cannot go to the event because you might end up bingeing DON'T GO TO THE EVENT. Make up any excuse you need to get out of the event. No one will remember.
Tip #5 - Walk around the room a lot and socialize. That's what you're there for!
