Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. This well known phrase are the words of a famous editorial written by Francis P. Church first published in the New York Sun newspaper in 1897. An 8 year old girl's query about the existence of Santa Claus prompted this poignant story of the meaning of Christmas. In the 4th century there was a Bishop Nicholas of Myra located in what is now Turkey. This man is said to be the first to inspire the christian belief of a Santa Claus also known as St. Nicholas. It is said that he brought gifts to poor children and to those in need. In modern day Europe Santa he is still depicted as a bishop in clerical clothing based from the historical facts of this era. Canonized a saint, St Nicholas' name has become synonymous with Santa Claus.
Prior to christian influence in ancient Germany it was believed that the mythical god Odin would ride an eight legged horse during the holiday called Yule. Children would fill their boots with carrots, straw and sugar for Odin's horse to eat and in return the mythical god would leave the children gifts or candy. The comparison of Odin riding an eight legged horse over great distances is obvious to that of Santa's reindeer. When Christianity came to Germany the Yule celebration was integrated into the belief of St. Nicholas.
It was in the 17th century that this holiday was introduced through the Dutch & British colonies. Father Christmas, as this Santa was known, delivered gifts of toys and candy to good children and sometimes coal to naughty ones. It was in the 19th century in 1863 that an artists rendition of Santa Claus appeared as a rather large jolly man, dressed in red and sporting a white beard. it is said that during this time the story of Santa Claus living in the North Pole was created.
Its obvious from a historical stance that a Santa Claus of sorts did exist. In today's world this mythical character exists in the hearts and minds of children all over the world fueled by the love of those who shower them with gifts on this special holiday.
