Between January 24 and April 27, 2008, you can view a major exhibit of Spanish sculptor and visionary, Juan Munoz. Munoz's pieces create a duality of reality and imagination, social inclusion and loneliness. This is Juan's first exhibition since his sudden death in 2001. "Juan Munoz: A Retrospective" will be showcased at the Tate Modern in Britain.

Juan Munoz became popular for his sculptures in the 1980s, when he completed many on-site sculptures of public art. His sculptures are usually life-sized humans, set up within complex surroundings or architecture. Juan's subjects usually have deeply engrained emotional expressions and are caught in the middle of action. Despite the engaging emotion in his work, Juan's passionate figures are usually alone, or caught in the middle of such complex backgrounds that they appear lonely and solitary.

For example, in "The Wasteland" Juan sets up a patterned floor that draws the audience's eyes to the ground. As you focus your attention further into the piece, you see in the distance a single lonely human sculpture, sitting on a bench. There's inherent emotion and drama in every Juan Munoz art piece. Juan's skillful application of complex settings and careful selection of sculpture location gives a surreal feel to every piece featured in this exhibit.

Munoz's work is also ground-breaking in that he does not actively seek to demonstrate a singular concept throughout his work. Instead, he attempts to take contrasting elements and demonstrate several concepts and ideas. In today's modern art, this has become an all-encompassing trend.

When one looks at Juan's sculptures, one can see a distinct humanity and emotion. His sculptures draw the audience into what the subject would be feeling. Just when you think you understand what he was trying to convey, Munoz skillfully changes his work with complex settings and backgrounds. In this act, his choice of medium strikes true contradiction- sculptures don't feel or choose their locations, but his sculptures seem self-situated and passionate in their own right.

If you visit or even view this exhibit online, you will probably fall in love with the rich complexity and underlying theme of Munoz's work.
