The Mezuzah is a scroll that is hung above the entrance of the doorway of your home for protection, but it is also very common and recommended to hang a Mezuzah at every doorway entrance and exit throughout your home. The actual Mezuzah is a parchment that is carefully held within an outer case. The Mezuzah its self contains all of the written laws to be followed daily in life. The scribe is upon a kosher quill that is written in black ink that is made from pure vegetable ingredients. The writing passage is only done by hand on every parchment.

When there is a Mezuzah present at the doorways, you must show respect by kissing your fingertips and placing the kiss upon the outer casing that protects the Mezuzah. It is also customary to say the words of "May God Protect my going and coming in, now and forever". The word of Shaddai is one of the very oldest words in Hebrew to mean God, and is an acronym for the phrase of "Shonmer Daltot Yisrael" that translates into the "Protector of the Doors of Israel".

When you have chosen the Mezuzah or Mezuzahs for the doorways that are throughout your home, and especially for the main entranceway, there are specific rules as to be and how they are to be properly hung. You must be ready to perform a hanging ceremony that is called the Hanukat Ha'Bayit. If you only are hanging one Mezuzah at the main front entrance, then there is only one ceremony to be performed, but if you are hanging several Mezuzahs, you must then do the ceremony for each and every door hanging of all of the Mezuzahs.

The Mezuzah scroll its self must be carefully rolled up and delicately placed within the Mezuzah cover. The parchment is to be placed within your hand, and the prayer side must be facing upward. You will then gently roll the scroll up, and the prayer must be rolled up on the inside, and specifically from the left to the right. After the rolling is complete, there will be the word of Shaddai visibly present.

You may now put in the parchment that is properly rolled up inside the cover with the word of Shaddai directly placed behind the Shin word. You may then attach the Mezuzah and cover on the right side of the doorway. It must be placed at the upper third section of the doorway, and diagonally hung with the casing top leaning toward the house opening. There are also two specific prayers that must be said during the hanging.

Thus silver Judaica in all its forms makes for interwining traditions for one's own good.

Among the growing number of books dealing with the fascinating miniature sculptures of Japan known as netsuke, so far has treated the subject specifically from the viewpoint of the amateur collector. It is the purpose of the present volume to answer the need for such a guide. The book fulfills this purpose by organizing for the first time in easy reference form the assorted bits and pieces of information included in earlier books about netsuke. At the same time it approaches the subject from the point of view of the amateur collector rather than that of an owner discussing his own accomplished collection. Ever since Japan's emergence a little over a century ago from her long period of seclusion under Tokugawa rule, netsuke have exerted an. almost irresistible attraction for Western collectors. These tiny carvings-exquisite in detail, charming in conception, and delightful for the. sheer tactual pleasure to be experienced in handling them-captivated admirers of Japanese art and craftsmanship. Basically, netsuke were utilitarian in purpose, for they were designed to serve as pendants or toggles to support medi-. cine boxes, writing cases, smoking equipment, and similar articles worn suspended by a cord from the obi-a practical device since the kimono had no pockets. At first quite primitive in design, they soon became more and more sophisticated, and their carvers turned increasingly to the lege ndry of Japan and China for inspiration and subject matter. As J apanese costume became ever more Westernized, however, netsuke went out of fashion and, almost simultaneously, became the object of intensive sea rch by collectors and museums. That the search continues-and that the interest in netsuke is a developing one-is proved not only by remarkable increases in the prices of. genuine netsuke but also by the recent appearance of more and more literature dealing with these charming products of Japanese craftsmanship. The r eader will quickly discover from Mary Louise O'Brien's delightful and competent. handling of the subject ·that she has made an invaluable contribution to this literature.

An Introduction to Netsuke

An Introduction to Netsuke

$12.95

NETSUKE artists have carved an imperishable niche for themselves in the hearts of collectors and connoisseurs everywhere. Among the many Japanese objets d'art, few have aroused greater admiration than the netsuke. This miniature piece of Japanese sculpture, approximately 1 1/2 inches in size, was designed (in the absence of pockets onkimonos) as an aid in suspending articles such as tobacco pouches from the sash of a kimono. It developed in ancient times as a utilitarian object, but became in the 16th century an artistic one as well, and flourished as such until 1926. No longer commonly worn, the netsuke is now a collectors' item, avidly sought throughout the world by those sensitive to its fme qualities. This book opens the miniature world of netsuke to those who have hitherto been unaware of its existence. In a delightfully lucid manner, the basics of the netsuke are presented-definition,origin, development, materials, statistics, and photographs. This book admirably fulfills its task of introducing the netsuketo the layman, irresistibly drawing him to new pleasures in aestheticism and culture.

The netsuke is a thing of wonder: a tiny utilitarian accessory to traditional Japanese dress that has become an art form in itself, prized by collectors from East to West. The V&A`s collection of netsuke is world-famous, and this stunning book draws on its many highlights to explore the origins of netsuke and to trace the sources of these designs in prints, paintings, and woodblock-printed books. It records the evolution of materials and techniques and the patterns of craftsmanship, and is illustrated with some of the very finest examples. A foreword by renowned ceramics artist Edmund de Waal, author of The Hare with Amber Eyes, sheds new light on the beauty and value of these miniature works of art.
