People have debated what the top 5 golf courses are in the country or even the world. Some times the debate is even more localized. The sample size for the ratings is important as well. If only a select few make the ratings how accurate can they be? If you get ratings from a large number of people who have actually played the courses then you can get a better idea of what they are really like.
You have probably heard of several public and private courses as being highly rated when watching golf tournaments on television like Pebble Beach, Sawgrass, Hilton Head, Bethpage Black, Firestone and more. What makes a golf course worthy of being in the top 5? On golflink.com where they have over 2 million members who submit their opinions on all of the various golf courses to get a much more true rating the top courses are listed as Bethpage State Park Golf Course - Black - Farmingdale, NY, Augusta National Course (Masters) - Augusta, GA, Pine Valley Course - Clementon, NJ, Kearney Hill Links - Lexington, KY and Riviera Country Club - Pacific Palisades, CA.
If you look at Golf Digest's list that just came out in August of the top 100 courses here are the top 5 golf courses they recommend - Pine Valley, Cyprus Point, Augusta National, Shinnecock Hills and Pebble Beach. Can anyone really afford to play any of these courses unless you are on the PGA Tour? It would be better if there was a Top 100 public courses that anyone can get on and play.
In fact, GolfWeek publishes an annual list of public courses. It took a little while to find it but they actually give you a state by state list of courses you can actually play. Here are the top 5 golf courses to play in my state of Ohio - Longaberger - Nashport, OH; Shaker Run - Lebanon, OH; Black Diamond - Millersburg, OH; Boulder Creek, Streetsboro, OH; Stonelick Hills - Batavia, OH.
What makes a course a top 5 course depends on what the reviewer thinks is important. Here is an example of what a particular reviewer rated a public course. He rated the Merion course in several areas: layout, quality of shaping, overall land plan, greens and surround and more.
For layout he noted that the "L" shaped course was good due to the shape of the parcel of land and that the newly lengthened tees could create a problem with cross firing on some holes and that the nines were non returning but the whole course started and ended at the club house.
For shaping he mentions that the fescue around the bunkers gives the course a more modern look than previously noted. The overall land plan is noted looking like a "heathlands park" surrounded by small houses and an ancient barn serving as a clubhouse with a locker room reminiscent of a luxurious high school gym. The reviewer then rates the par 3 holes as the best in the country varying from needing a wedge to a fairway wood and he extols the virtues of the par 4 holes as well stating that each one has its own unique character
