All home owners are familiar with most electronic security systems available in the market today. Most of them may come in different appearances but the idea behind them do not change. Take, for example, the case of the motion sensor alarm which is basically a device equipped with an "eye" that looks for suspicious movement or activity within its field of vision and triggers an alert or alarm when it detects something.

Well, we all know that these things really do not see but merely senses movement through the clever use of light and, in some devices, microwave.

Infrared is a light wavelength that is not visible to the naked eye. Infrared sensors are used as the eye in many motion sensor designs. Since the human body emits a relatively high amount of infrared energy (due to heat) compared to normal home environment, an infrared motion sensor is merely programmed to see the presence of movement when they see the infrared signature of a human walking into its field of coverage. The sensor will then trigger an alert or alarm to give notice to the potential intrusion.

Other types of motion detectors make use of microwave and works just like a radar. They send out signals of microwave and waits for the waves to bounce back. When a burglar walks into the path of the waves, they register a different pattern and will be construed as a potentially illegal activity going on inside the home and will also trigger alarms.

Other systems make use of laser technology and basically makes use of the same principle as the above two types.

Motion sensors are usually installed in areas of the home that are considered vulnerable to potential break-ins by burglars, vandals and thieves. There are designs dedicated for door and window installation which are two parts of the home that are probably the most vulnerable and targeted. They are, however, not limited to those areas as some designs are intended for installation in the hallways, garage or even outside the house.

Since there are many different types of motion sensors, you will need to figure out which one will work best with your home first. That should be easy but if you find yourself stuck, don't be afraid to ask an expert so you can go about it smoothly with minimal chances for mistakes.
