Lighthouse Keeper

With the many walks available on North Island, it can be difficult to narrow the walks down to a manageable number if you are there for a week or two. I've compiled a list of what I think are five outstanding single day treks that will delight walkers.

Cape Brett Track

This 16.3km track is located inside of the Cape Brett Scenic Reserve in the Bay of Islands on North Island's east coast. Taking about 8 hours to complete, the track takes you across Maori owned land and through gorgeous forests to the dramatic ocean views. Walking along the top of the cliffs allows you to watch the marine life below. Stopping for a swim in Deep Water Cove gives you a respite before tackling the steep rugged track that takes you to the lighthouse.

Because the track crosses over private land, a track maintenance fee must be paid. The Cape Brett Lighthouse Keeper's house has been converted into a serviced DOC hut that sleeps 23 and has mattresses and cooking facilities available. The stunning views from the hut are more than worth the hut fee.

Herekino Forest Track

On the northwest coast of New Zealand's spectacular North Island is a walking track that requires an above average level of fitness to finish the 15km trek. The Herekino Forest Track is rugged but beautiful and takes you through a mature podocarp forest, past some stand of giant kauri to incredible ocean views.

Herekino Forest is home to many threatened and endangered species like the kauri snail, North Island brown kiwi, and long tailed bat. The forest is a very important conservation area in New Zealand because of its ecosystems and history. Its diverse landscapes make walking the track a pleasure.

Taking about 9 hours to complete, this walk is challenging. You may want to arrange for accommodations in the surrounding area and ask that you be given transportation there and back in the morning.

Hauturu Highpoint Track

The Waima Forest is an amazing forest that has, high on the bluffs, plants that are found no place else and are thought to be hangovers from the ice age. Within this forest are several walks however the Hauturu Highpoint Track stands out among them. Although it is only 3.3kms each way, it will take at least 5 hours to complete the trek. Due to the terrain, this walk can be quite punishing and is not for those with less than above average fitness.

The view from the top is quite stunning and well worth the effort. Start the trek early as it is not a track you want to be on in diminishing light. There is quite a rise in altitude with fast weather changes so make sure to take appropriate clothing with you. You might encounter wind chills as you ascend

To make sure that your day goes well, make sure that you have all the necessary permits and accommodations. Don't ever take your dog with you on your trek as they are not allowed. If you are traveling any distance, you don't want the day to be over before it starts because you failed to research and adhere to the rules.
