As city dwellers we are used to life inside. Many of us spend the best part of our lives with a roof over our heads - be it the painted ceilings of our homes or the false ceilings that hide the cable spaghetti in our offices.
We tend to see outside, where nature lives, from the couch. Nestled into soft cushions we watch ever more spectacular wildlife documentaries almost certainly narrated by Sir David Attenborough.
In order to keep up with the stunning photography, these shows dramatize the lives of animals into a soap opera of epic proportions. Boy do those critters suffer!
We watch stunned as images of a baby elephant caught in a dust storm, lost and separated from his mother; a gannet chick battered to an early death by the surf of the southern Ocean; a lion cub wasted away from hunger, yet always calling to his pride; or a fur seal torpedoed by a killer whale and tossed into the air; play out on our plasmas.
All of these images tug at our heartstrings. We feel both the power of the winner and also pity for the victim. It is an odd sensation.
There is no doubt that these pictures, suitably adorned with evocative narration and emotive music, make great television.
What we sometimes forget is that actually, out in the real world of the Kalahari, Patagonia and the Serengeti, there is no drama in these scenes, no real theatre or emotion.
The whale catches the seal because that us what it is designed to do. The lion cub will try and try until it either succeeds or succumbs, and the elephant calf lives, or not. None of these individual events is anything other than what nature intended.
So Tip #3 for 'How to love nature when you live in the city' is
remember that nature is natural
Here are two ways to do it:
- When you next see a great wildlife documentary, view it without the sound. Look at the images for what they are without the emotive music and dramatization of the narrative. See what emotions come up for you without the added triggers.
- Watch a cat.
