We've owned a lot of pets, from rabbits to snakes, iguanas to parakeets, but the ultimate, quintessential pet is still the dog. Dogs - pets are reliable, loyal, sturdy, and fun. They have lots of great qualities and few poor ones, and with proper training can become a companion for more than a dozen years. In this brief article, we'll go over some of the things to look for in a dog, and some of the things to avoid. We'll also take a look at some simple dog training techniques.
The things that make a dog great change depending on the type of dog, and what you are looking for in a companion. For example, many people purchase large dogs for their majestic, strong qualities, while others enjoy the playfulness and grace of medium dogs, and still others go for the adorable, excitable small dogs. Making a mental note of the qualities you want most in your dog pets will make the choice much easier. Good qualities to look for are health, friendliness and affection, interest in people and other dogs, and the ability to listen to and follow simple commands.
However, there are some qualities in dog pets, be they inherent or learned, which can make living with them very difficult. Dogs that come from the shelter are often abused, malnourished, or have a violent history, and this can lead to odd or dangerous behavior (however, not all dogs with a poor history are bad dogs). If a dog growls at people or bares its teeth, it should not be avoided (however, a dog with its muzzle down and its rear in the air is saying, "Play with me!"). A dull coat, glazed eyes, or lost fur might mean the dog is unhealthy.
Arguably the most rewarding part of owning a dog is teaching your dog to follow your commands. Dogs, pets are great learners, and can be trained to perform a variety of tasks, tricks, and games. Starting simple is important, to get your dog used to listening to you. Try starting with one-syllable commands, like "sit," "down," and "stay." Reward successful listening with praise or a small treat. If you catch your dog doing something bad, punish only with a single "bad dog," as repeated punishment will just confuse them. Similarly, you can't punish a dog for something it did more than a little while after the fact, as they won't know what they're being punished for.
