Thirty five years ago the Longaberger Company was started but the current company continues to be based in those early traditions and roots. This mission statement was created when the company began; "To Stimulate a Better Quality of Life," staying true to this mission statement has always been the company's goal.
At present, the company offers a variety of handcrafted products, including wrought iron accessories, pottery and baskets, and provides a chance at self-employment to approximately 45,000 Home Consultants.
History of the Company
In 1896, the Longaberger family settled in Dresden, Ohio which was a active villlage at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. At the time, baskets were the container of choice, and the Dresden Basket Factory made baskets for carrying all types of things like pottery ware. J.W. Longaberger became a full-time apprentice at the local factory where he learned the art that would become his trademark. During this time, he met Bonnie Jean Gist, whom he married in 1927.
The factory's doors were closed due to the Great Depression forcing J.W. to seek work at the local paper mill but he continued to make baskets in his free time. J.W. and Bonnie purchased the old basket factory in 1936 and renamed it The Ohio Ware Basket Company. Bonnie and J.W. had 12 children during their life together. The 5th child was Dave, who was disadvantaged both by his family's low economic status and the fact that he was afflicted with a bad stutter and epilepsy. However, Dave was ambitious, and as a young boy, he was constantly taking odd jobs for money.
As Dave went on in life, he served two years in the Army and ended up driving a bread truck. After his daughter Tami was born, Dave and his wife bought the Dairy Bar in Dresden, as well as an old grocery. Together they remodeled the grocery store building and reopened it as Dresden IGA Foodliner. These two businesses were how he provided for his own growing family. The trend toward popularity of baskets in the 1970s caused Dave to ask his father, J.W. to make baskets and he would sell them in his store. The baskets were such a hit that they sold out immediately. J.W. passed away just at the time the baskets were becoming popular again.
To honor his father, Dave opened J.W. Handwoven Baskets in 1976. He was even able to buy and use the old woolen mill that his mother worked in when he was a child. To expand his basket business, Dave knew he needed to sell them in other locales, not just locally. In 1978, the direct sales organization of Longaberger baskets was begun when Dave realized the best showcase for the baskets was home consultants.
Joining the company in 1984, Dave's daughter Tami proved to be an excellent leader and 10 years later she was appointed president. She helped diversify the company into other home lifestyle areas. The company is now the premier manufacturer of handcrafted home-style products including baskets.
