This article discusses a clever way to increase productivity in the work place. A method that famed industrialist Charles Schwab utilized to maximize productivity among men.

The story goes like this: Charles Schwab had a mill manager whose men weren't producing their quota of work.

"How is it," Schwab asked, "That a man as capable as you can't make this mill turn out what it should?"

"I don't know," the man replied, "I've coaxed the men; I've pushed them; I've sworn and cussed but nothing works. They just won't produce."

It happened to be the end of the day just before the night shift came on. This is what happened next:

"Give me a piece of chalk," Schwab said. Then turning to the nearest man: "How many heats did your shift make today?"

"Six." Then, without another word, Schwab chalked a big figure 6 on the floor and walked away.

When the night shift came, they inquired about why there was a big number 6 drawn on the floor. The day crew guys said that the "big boss" wanted to know our output and he chalked it down.

The next morning Schwab walked into the mill and saw a big 7. So this implied the night shift thought they were more capable of the day crew. Well it turns out that the day crew worked enthusiastically that day to return the challenge and when the night crew came, they saw a big 10 on the floor, etc.

The mill was pumping to capacity.

So the lesson is: Throw down a challenge! Charles Schwab says it in his own words, "The way to get things done is to stimulate competition, I do not mean in a sordid, money-getting way, but in the desire to excel."
