Whether you are simply after a functional basket to use on your next picnic outing or trying to add some decorative flair to your dining table, Longaberger baskets fill the bill in all departments. Hand-woven excellence is the primary and most enduring feature of these baskets but, in some cases, there is a bonus to buying a Longaberger basket - many of them actually appreciate in value.
Chances are though it's the desire to own something that looks good that will initially draw you to Longaberger. The range of baskets available is truly staggering, from the small "Love letters" baskets to the large bushel baskets and everything in between. If you want to store something safely away, why not store it in an attractive container.
Longaberger baskets have had their reputation built on the quality of the craftsmanship that has gone into the products. It's the attention to detail that has allowed the company to enjoy high sales figures despite the fact that the baskets are more expensive than those you can find elsewhere.
Now we come to the value of scarcity. Longaberger has been clever in creating a collectors market out of their range of baskets. They've done this by issuing short runs of special occasion baskets such as Easter, Christmas, Halloween, Mother's and Father's Day baskets, each with a distinguishing style or weave pattern and an identifying brass tag. The baskets are only available for limited lengths of time and only a limited number are manufactured.
Collectors by nature are completists so if someone has bought, say, every Inaugural basket up until now, it's more than likely they will be buying the basket that will be released to celebrate the next Presidential Inauguration. This not only guarantees future sales for the company, it also ensures that the healthy secondary market will flourish too.
For 34 years, the sales model used by Longaberger was not the traditional store-based sales of most other companies. Instead Longaberger baskets were only available through home-based sales via a Home Consultant who talked customers through the various products. However, with signs that sales of new baskets were slipping the company decided to explore new avenues for propping up sales such as a first ever Longaberger Factory Store which opened in March 2007. The company has also participated in "basket fests" where basket makers demonstrate their art and attendees have the opportunity to purchase the Dresden tour baskets that are normally only available at the factory store.
Demand in the secondary market is still high for Longaberger baskets with so-called retired baskets snapped up by eager buyers. It's a testament to the ongoing high quality of the products created by the company and the loyalty of the collectors who love their baskets.
Collectors and lovers of quality baskets are invited to visit the The Basket Place to browse the vast range of baskets, basket liners and associated basketry products available.
