Do you want to know what Willow Tree figurines are? She originally made her name with her fiber art which has been viewed all around the globe and she actually has a Master of Fine Arts in Textile Design so sculpting was something completely new and different for her. But how is it that the figurines Susan sculpts, which are so simple in design and color, can create such powerful and personal emotions?
Well, yes, the figurines are very simple in design, but it isn't to make things easier for Susan! I'm sure if she believed giving the figurines little faces would strengthen their affect, she would and they'd look great. But it's not the detail that invokes the strong reactions in people, it's the simplicity. Because the figurines are without any facial expression at all, they rely completely on body language to imply the emotions that are being portrayed which is actually the secret to their strength. The intent wasn't to create a "Tim and Mary are in love" figurine or a "doesn't that Sally have a free spirit!" figurine, the idea was to make "[blank] and [blank] are [blank]" or " [blank] is really [blank]" figurines where you fill in the gaps, and naturally you will fill in the gaps with yourself and a loved one, or how you feel about something.
The figurine becomes you and how you feel about everyone else, yourself and life and it is because the figurines are faceless that you are able to do this! There are so many different sculptures to choose from that a lot of them will remind you of different people in your life or or a way you used to feel, or still feel about anything and everything. Because the sculptures conjure up these memories or feelings and emotions, keeping one around will mean you will never forget the way you felt about your first love, your growing child or an even an old friend.
You can't help it, everyone has these memories and feelings and these broad portrayals of those things can make a piece an incredibly personal item.
