Located on the Queensland and New South Wales border is the southern most Gold Coast city of Coolangatta. To the north of Coolangatta are beaches such as Greenmount and Rainbow Bay which are well known for their surfing and swimming opportunities as well as the popular Snapper Rocks and Duranbah. Coolangatta is also popular amongst fishermen with snapper, bream and tailor all regulars is the fishing baskets. The main Gold Coast airport is also located in Coolangatta which services most major cities and offers day trips to the Great Barrier Reef.
The first documented person to visit Coolangatta was Captain Cook who is believed to have visited the area when he was charting the Australian coast in 1770. Captain Cook named the areas around Coolangatta as Point Danger and Mount Warning. The Tweed River developed into a significant port area around 1830 when cedar wood was shipped from there. Visitors to Coolangatta date back to the 1880s and the twin towns of Coolangatta and Tweed Heads were founded around 1883.
The area around Coolangatta is also significant in that Greenmount was original surf life saving club on the Australian Gold Coast and was established in 1909. Point Danger is also a great lookout spot to watch for dolphins and the migrating humpback whales that pass through this area each year as well as the many seabirds which soar overhead. Scuba diving is also popular with Cook Island and Kirra easily reachable from Coolangatta.
Coolangatta is also well known for its regular markets, restaurants, cafes and shopping. There is also a number of annual and special one off festivals in Coolangatta including the Wintersun rock 'n' roll festival each June and the September beachside A La Carte food feast which all make for a great experience during your holidays. There are also cross border celebrations each New Years Eve with fireworks on both the New South Wales and Queensland sides of the border. The Captain Cook lighthouse is a great local attraction and a significant point of interest for all tourists and visitors.
