The town of Maldon - Essex is located on England's Blackwater estuary. Maldon has been twinned with the town of Cuijk in the Netherlands. The towns signed a charter to cement their relationship in 1970.
Maldon's name comes from the words 'mael' and 'dun', meaning 'meeting place' and 'hill'. It was therefore known as 'the meeting place on the hill'. The first settlers were East Saxons who arrived in the 5th Century. Maldon became a busy port for the Saxons. Pieces of imported pottery have been discovered by archaeologists. In 958, a Royal Mint was established to make coins for Norman kings and the Anglo-Saxons.
Maldon is known in England, and in many other countries, as the leading modern day point for sailing barges on the Thames River. Every year a barge race is held, ending with a spectacular parade and a prize-giving ceremony at the quay. The original building dock where early barges were built is still in operation today.
Another well-patronized annual event is Taxi Day. Physically and mentally handicapped children living in London are transported to Maldon in London taxi cabs for a day of festive fun and a slap-up meal. This event began when a London taxi driver visited a home for handicapped children in 1952.
The driver wanted to arrange a special outing for the children he met at the school. So he sent a letter to all seaside resorts in Essex asking them to invite the children for an outing. The only response he got was from Maldon. Since then, this day has become a tradition.
Another festive occasion that is held every year in Maldon - Essex is the Victorian Evening. This event takes place on 2 nights in December. All the residents dress in Victorian clothing and hold a market. They set up stalls and sell handmade items and traditional food.
