I arrived in California ready to begin a new life, open to inspiration and the opportunity to hear my inner voice again. After a month, I wondered why I did not receive clear answers. Where was the light shining on the next path, the next direction? I wanted to trust my inner guidance all the time. I wanted to go to sleep with a question and wake up with a clear answer the next morning. I wanted to take a long walk and have the answer by the time I returned to the international hostel where I was staying. But, the answers were not clear and the silence inside of me deepened as I continued to stay open and live in uncertainty.
Sometimes when I had received guidance it felt like Pow! Wow! and a huge AHA! when an idea burst forward and an answer appeared. Other times there was a little voice or feeling that told me to call someone or go someplace or do something and I knew that the guidance was there, if I chose it. It could also feel like nothing was happening and like the inner guidance had disappeared or was defective.
I walked to the Santa Monica Pier every morning. I pressed the pedestrian button to cross Ocean Avenue. A voice from the street light speaker spoke out loud for all of the pedestrians to hear. Wait... Wait... Wait... Cross Ocean Avenue, Cross Ocean Avenue and then the countdown, 19, 18, 17, 16, 15...5, 4, 3, 2, 1.
As I walked on the beach, asking questions and listening for answers, I thought, why can't my intuition speak to me with that clarity, that rhythm? Wait, cross, and the countdown that lets me know, if I don't move into it soon, the window of opportunity will close soon.
The truth is that my inner guidance always works. I believe that with my whole heart. Sometimes the answers take longer. I must practice the art of stillness and calm the part of me that wants to know it all now. I have had moments of doubting my inner guidance and I began to look outside of myself for the answers.
I have learned that looking for the answer to a specific question can be a distraction from the deeper question. I can feel myself squirming inside as if the ego does not want me to wait for the deeper answer.
As I wait, I ask myself questions to stir my soul:
1) What is my next step?
2) What do I need to know today?
3) How can I serve?
I listen and wait. I allow a space to discover things I need to let go of in the form of beliefs, old patterns, anything limiting me from discovering the next part of my journey. The answer can come in the form of a book, a TV show, an inspired conversation, a billboard or a phone call.
In my past experiences, I have learned that this is the stillness, the time of silence that is a preparation before the next answers will come. And they will come in the perfect timing. I continue to listen and wait.
