Why be unhappy when you could choose to be happy?

Happiness and unhappiness are both emotions arising out of the everyday events in our lives that we have chosen to accept.The feelings that arise from these events come from the way that we think about the events. We can learn to have more control of our thoughts and as our feelings arise from our thoughts we can learn to control our feelings.

Gaining control starts with becoming aware of how you are feeling at this moment. You have to understand that we have grown up with the belief that the cause of our feeling of unhappiness comes from outside of ourselves and is not something that we can control.

How long would you choose to be unhappy if you were punished for being unhappy. You can choose between self-fulfilling responses rather than self defeating ones. In situations that now irritate you or make you angry decide to find better activities that will get you through the time in a more constructive way, for example if you are caught up in the inevitable traffic jam, rather than building up and venting your spleen, accept the situation and turn the situation to your advantage, use the time to play your favourite music or listen to an educational or motivational tape or simply use the time to record facts from your days work which will save you time later.

Negative thoughts lead to negative emotions that impact upon our ability to think through situations clearly and they tend to immobilize us to varying degrees ranging from mild indecision and hesitancy to total inaction.

The most effective way to combat immobilization is to live in the moment, focus on the Now. All of life is in the moment, there is no life in the past moments or future moments only in the present moment, that is why it is called ( "the Present" ).

Present moment living is the best way to combat the inertia caused by negative thinking..If the most worthwhile aim of life is the pursuit of happiness hen be happy in the moment, 60 happy moments make a happy hour. Happiness like misery is addictive,

Focus on happy moments, train yourself to bring into mind happy thoughts whenever you realize you are wallowing in misery, if you do this repeatedly you will soon develop this as a strategy or defense mechanism that will get you through life with a lot more happy days, Remember you can't be happy and miserable at the same time.

For my own part I have learned that I like to whistle or sing a tune when I am happy,

So if I feel tension or frustration building up I start to sing a favourite song and very soon the tension is replaced by a more happy feeling.
