Notre Dame Football Recruiting Fills Up On Quarterbacks

In the past 10 football recruiting runs, Notre Dame 3 times has enrolled an extra QB in one class.

Coach Davie scored 4 in 2000, Coach Willingham landed two in '04 and Coach Charlie Weis contracted two in 2006.

Brian Kelly will probably shortly join that group, and he may even outdo .

The just-starting-out Notre Dame head football coach, who, when he was hired this past month, had but 1 scholarship quarterback, could bring in 5 in a football recruiting class that goes official on Wednesday, even though 2 of them are considered multi-position players and most likely wouldn't join the QB frazzle at Notre Dame.

3 - early quarterback Tommy Rees, player Andrew Hendrix and quarterback Luke Massa - are players whose careers will probably remain at quarterback, according to CBS College Sports Network Notre Dame Football recruiting analyst Tom Lemming.

The other two QBs, Danny Spond from Columbine High in Littleton, CO, and Derek Roback in Waverly, OH, are high school football recruits who are marked players and have the option to move to other positions, Lemming said. Danny Spond is a former CO commit, and Roback is promised to Ohio. All 4 unsigned recruits are expected to visit Notre Dame next weekend.

You know what, bring in athletes, Lemming said. I say the more the merrier when it comes to athletes.

The 6-foot-2, 232-pound Spond, according to Lemming, is already a good linebacker. And the 6-3, 210-pound Roback is a former national finalist in the Punt, Pass & Kick competition.

Despite the fact that Danny and Derek are expected to switch positions if they select Notre Dame, Coach Kelly is still likely to see inquiries from those who believe enrolling greater than one quarterback in one class is a football recruiting mistake. And the depreciators will use the past to prove their point.

Among the 8 QBs who were part of multiple-QB classes at Notre Dame football recruiting, the only one to close his career as a quarterback and at Notre Dame was Darrin Bragg, a Willingham football recruit who was moved to wide receiver, then left Notre Dame entirely before being sweet-talk by the Coach to return for his last year as an fill-in quarterback.

So no, the past experience doesn't support what Kelly is attempting. But this season is no typical year in that Coach Kelly has not exactly inherited a wide chart at the position.

"What happened was they made a major mistake in not bringing in anybody last year," Lemming posits. "So they have to rectify the mistake from last year."
