Your House Painter Won't Pick Colours For You
Picking a paint colour for the outside or your house is an important decision. You want to highlight the best features of your house without clashing with the neighbours. A bland house colour is no fun but you also don't want to go too bright and crazy or you'll upset the neighbours and have people wondering what you were thinking.
Before you pick a colour you love be sure to check with the government to see if there are any local ordinances for your area in regards to paint colour. You may qualify for tax credits or other benefits if you are trying to restore your house to it's original colour depending on how old your house is.
To start, you might want to take a walk around your neighbourhood and take pictures of some of the houses you like. When you go back and look at the pictures you might find a common theme and it will help you determine what sort of style and colours you are drawn to.
Take into consideration the age of your house, the colour of your neighbours houses and your landscape in order to pick the right colour for the exterior painting of your house. You may also want to harmonize the colour you paint your house with the colours of your roof, don't paint your house the same colour as the roof but be sure the colours compliment each other.
Take notice of any features on your house that won't be painted, light fixtures, window frames and brick walls might help determine or at least short list the possibilities for what colour to paint your house.
Choosing accent colours in the same family as the main house colour but a bit darker could make your house look smaller. If the secondary colours are lighter than the main house colour you've chosen it could make your house look bigger. With one main colour and two or three secondary colours you should have enough variation to make things interesting to look at once everything is painted.
Houses painted in a lighter colour tend to stand out of their environment a bit more than a darker colour theme which will allow your house blend in. Darker colours fade more noticeably than light colours because they absorb heat and when they do fade it's harder to touch up areas that may need it. Darker colours are also a bit more work if you decide to paint your house a lighter colour the next time around but nothing a coat or two of primer couldn't fix.
Painting your garage door the same as the main colour of your house will make your house appear larger than if you use a different colour. Paint the trim around the garage door the same colour as your front door or other trim on the house.
A great way to visualize how your house will look with the paint colours you've chosen is to use the Benjamin Moore Personal Color Viewer, basically this is $10 software that allows you to upload a picture of your house and change the colours so you can see how it will look with the colours you've chosen. Most paint stores have their own versions of this as well.
Using books and magazines to get inspiration is a great way to go and may help you find a colour scheme you wouldn't have chosen just from looking at paint chips in the store. There are even some great books dedicated to this very topic.
Always test paint an area so you can see what the colour looks like within the surroundings it will be used. Not all colours look the same in the store as they will on your house.
Once you've picked all your colours you'll have to determine whether you will attempt to paint your house yourself or if you'll hire a house painter.
