Four Distinctly French Canadian Celebrations

According to the company some of the most often overlooked gift giving opportunities can be found in and around French Canadian communities, particularly Quebec. The following four events are times of celebration for many Québécois and other French Canadians. In many cases, it’s better to send a gift at these times than during traditional English Canadian celebrations because many French Canadians don’t place the same value on these “Anglo” holidays.
National Patriots’ Day (Monday before May 25th)
This is Quebec’s counterpart to Victoria Day. Many French Canadians are not particularly enamored of British Royalty, or would rather celebrate Francophone culture. In the mid 1800s, the Patriote Movement fought for democratic rights in Quebec, even organizing a rebellion against the British crown in 1837. In 2003, the Quebec National Assembly (provincial government) enshrined the memory of that struggle in a distinct holiday. Quebec residents have the day off, making it the first long weekend in warm weather – a time to get out to patios and cottages, and a great time to send gift baskets with a party theme.
Quebec’s National Holiday or Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day (June 24th)
Quebec’s National Holiday is effectively the same as the Catholic Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day and is viewed as a celebration of Francophone culture. The Saint-Jean-Baptiste Society promoted the holiday as a francophone counterpart to the Irish St. Patrick’s Day, as an expression of cultural pride. The day is also a rallying point for separatists, making it a somewhat controversial holiday. Nevertheless, it’s popular throughout Quebec and as Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day, other French speaking communities. It’s probably not a good idea to send gift baskets with a Canadian theme, but anything that would provide party snacks will probably be much appreciated.
Moving Day in Quebec (July 1st)
Moving Day dates back to Quebec’s old semi-feudal society, which forbade commoners from loving until the winter passed. This eventually transformed into a law that made July 1st the official end date of all leases in the province. The law has changed since then, but many people move on or around that day anyway. Moving Day is the same day as Canada Day, but to many Quebec residents it’s less a time to kick back than a time to pack. This is an ideal occasion to send gift baskets with a housewarming theme. Moving Day is especially hectic in Montreal, where almost tow thirds of residents rent.
Construction Holiday (Last Two Weeks of July)
The construction holiday has a rather mundane origin, but it’s still an important influence on Quebec culture. In 1970, the Quebec government legislated two weeks holiday at the end of July for members of the construction industry. As a result, this same two weeks has grown into the most popular time of the year for members of other professions to schedule their summer holidays as well. This is a good time to send treats to help vacationers pass the time.
