How to have a more Eco-friendly Christmas
It's easy to get so involved in all of the hustle and bustle of Christmas that we forget about how un-environmentally friendly we are being. We through quantities of paper away, we put up elaborate decorations and lights both inside and outside, we often use paper plates because we don't want to have to do dishes, and we make goodies to give to people that we put in disposable containers.
If every one of us stopped to think about all of the ways by which we forget to be Eco conscious because we want convenience, the realization might be a real eye opener.
Christmas Decorations Ornaments
Here is a look at some ways by which to be more Eco friendly this Christmas. You don't have to go out of your way to do any of these things. You might be surprised to discover that you will be greatly rewarded for your efforts because your electric bill will be lower.
*Put lights on timers -
Putting your lights on a timer will limit the amount of time that you have them on and eliminate the need for you to remember to turn them off. You can do that with your outdoor and indoor lights and decorations.
*Switch to LED lights -
LED lights use far less energy than traditional lights. They don't get hot, but they deliver the same brightness as traditional lights. The cost is considerably more at the onset, but the amount of money that you will save on your utility bill will more than off set the cost.

*Don't use paper plates and napkins -
Paper plates and napkins are not especially Eco friendly. You cannot recycle paper plates after food has been on them, so they wind up in the garbage. If you were to use regular plates and cloth napkins, you would save all of the money that you would otherwise spend on paper plates and napkins.
*Don't waste water -
Fill a dish pan with warm soapy water so that you can soak dishes and get the gunk off of them before putting them in the dishwasher, or before actually washing them. By allowing dishes to sit in soapy water rather than running water the entire time you are trying to remove the caked on food, you will save on your water bill and on your electric bill.
*Fill the dishwasher completely before running it -
Don't run the dishwasher when it's only partially full. As long as you have enough dishes to use while you are filling the dishwasher, you should be able to wait to run it. You can also save money by not using the heated dry on your dishwasher.
*Do laundry in cold water-
Doing your laundry in cold water will also save you considerably on your utility bill. All of the laundry detergent manufacturers have designed products that are made to be used with cold water. They give you the same clean without the need to use hot water.
*Do all of your baking on the same day -
By doing all of your baking on the same day, you can avoid having to preheat the oven time and time again, and it won't take as much energy to get the oven up to the temperature because it will already be warm. Even better, do your baking on a day when it's cold outside and take advantage of some of the heat from the oven to warm the house.
*Recycle your tree -
If you have a real tree, don't just discard it. See if you can have it cut into wood chips so that you can use the chips for mulch. Wood chips make great mulch and are expensive to purchase. You can put the pine needles into your compost heap and that will add a lot of nitrogen to your compost heap.
*Save or recycle your gift wrap -
If everyone in your house makes an effort to unwrap gifts in such a way that the paper can be saved and reused, that will conserve on a lot of paper. If it isn't possible to reuse it, be sure you put the paper in the recycling (if your town recycles the gift wrap.) Purchase gift wrap that is made from recycled paper, if at all possible.
As an alternative, make your own gift wrap. Use brown paper bags and then paint little Christmas designs on the brown paper. Use the newspaper and put festive holiday stamps on the paper. Use colorful ribbon to make the newspaper wrapped gift look more festive.
*Turn your heat and hot water heaters down -
If you are lighting a fire for ambiance anyway, turn the heat in your home down. Put heavier blankets on the beds and have people wear a sweater when in the house. Turn your hot water heater down so that it isn't using electricity to heat more water when it's already full.
*Limit the amount of outdoor lighting you use -
If you normally put up a huge light display outside, consider scaling it down this year unless you can use only LED lights. Shorten the amount of time that you have the lights up. Instead of putting the lights up after Thanksgiving, put them up the week before Christmas. Simple things that don't require a huge financial investment or an inordinate amount of work can make your Christmas festivities much more Eco friendly. By being more environmentally aware, you will also lower your own utility bills and other expenses. In a year when everyone is feeling the effects of the recession, small changes that lead to long term savings will make your holiday much brighter, and the money you save is a great Christmas gift you can give yourself.
