Special Birthday Plate, Special Day

The night before my birthday, I'd lay awake in my bed, eager to celebrate the next day. I knew what was coming and I knew it would be special each and every year. My mother would sneak into my bedroom before I awoke and sing "Happy Birthday." I knew it was coming, but it still woke me with a start every single time. Then I couldn't help but smile because I knew today would be a good day. I would get dressed, comb my hair, go to the kitchen, and there it was - - the red plate! The possessor of the red plate had complete control for the day of the meals that the family would eat. Mom stood there with a camera standing by to snap photos of my day so that she could scrapbook the memories. I felt like a queen for the day. I remember that when I was 10, I chose french toast with powdered sugar for breakfast, ham and cheese with chips for lunch (I was brown-bagging it for school at the time) and lasagna for dinner. Then after all of the good food, we'd open presents after dinner and have dessert. That year it was a strawberry and whip cream layered cake, once again on the red plate. The day was a success! The magic of the plate prevailed once again. I was special for that day.

Such fond memories will not soon be forgotten. Now that I'm a mother, I want to pass down that special tradition to my children. I hope that we can celebrate many special days together as a family, just as I had as a little girl. I wanted to find the perfect plate to help celebrate. After all, the red plate was the key to the day's success. I searched stores and the internet to find it. I knew that I made the right choice in getting these special plates for my children when I caught my son whispering to his sister about his hopes for the plate one year. Each year, we pull out the plate on their special day and each year, they get the same smile I remember having on my face as I wake them up with a "Happy Birthday" greeting. I'm glad that we have this special tradition in our family and hope that one day, my grandchildren, too will get to share in that same joy.

You know, it doesn't really matter the plate you choose or the color it bears, but it's about making your child feel special. Finding ways to help your child know that they are loved and that they are remembered has all the value in the world. It's the little things each day, the hugs, the kisses, the touching of a hand that they will remember. They may not remember each instance, but they will always remember it in their heart. May your family traditions help your children to feel special and know that they have a family that cares.
