It is widely know that the US has a good amount of oil reserves within our nation's boundaries, and yet, we've not really gone after it with the same fervor as we have in buying Middle Eastern Oil. So, the question remains should we drill for our oil now, or wait and become the last man standing after everyone else's oil runs out? That is an interesting question along the peak oil theory, and not long ago, an acquaintance of mentioned that he'd heard someone say;
"We have a ton of oil here on American soil, and the American public with a lack of foresight, feels upset about seeking out oil all over the globe, paying through the nose, etc." and that "eventually, when the countries abroad are out of, or can at least no longer reach their in ground assets, we will be left with an ample amount of oil right beneath our own feet, leaving us in a power position, and a solid economic platform to work from..."
Okay so, we've all heard this strategic concept, but is it so? And if it is, then does that strategy make sense? Well, here are my thoughts on this topic. You see, from a strategic standpoint this would be a wise way to play it, and the oil in the Middle East is very cheap, right next to the ground, as it was once in TX - drill a whole and up it shoots.
We seem to have giant reserves in ND as I am told, that's good. Well, we might start getting it now, build the pipelines and start pumping as need be, as China and India take more on the global markets driving costs up. And it's not as expensive to get it in the Continental US, than under the ice at the Earth's Northern Pole areas.
Speaking of a problem, we have something like 6-7 countries claiming that oil, so the big boys are going to have to work something out fair for everyone, or you can expect armed conflict there. We need oil for another 30-years minimum to fly, ship, and drive - prior to a transition. Infrastructure also has to be paid for and an ROI achieved, but that ain't happening at $35-50 per barrel, try $75-90 as the new norm with spikes into the $120s early and often in the coming decade.
And that is going to be pretty tough on the US economy and it will cost more too if the dollar value goes to hell from money printing. Not sure, it's going to all work out the way we hope. Although I am not a Peak Oil freak, I get the concept, and see the point. Look, we have good reserves for a while that we know about.
But you know, China is buying our coal now, we ship it to Canada, they ship it to China. We had 250-years supply, but if we keep shipping it to China, well, we won't anymore. And if everyone drives an electric car, and 60% of our energy comes from coal-fired plants, well? These problems and challenges are not really rocket science anymore are they? Please consider all this.
